A bicycle that floats

Now this looks interesting.  What would be even better is a practical kit into which I could install one of my existing bikes, use it on the water, and then remove the bike to use it on the road, with a minimum of fuss.

$6500????

I have to think it would not be overly difficult to build a platform for a regular bike attaching the fork to a rudder and driving a paddle wheel with the rear tire for a whole lot less than that.  You could probably base it on a single hull design like a kayak or a canoe and go pretty fast.

Ah - re-read the article.  I don't think I am the target market for such a contraption.   =D

Works for ATVs.  =D

That thing looks like it belongs on the cover of a The Sharper Image catalog.

It would be better if you could hook up your bike to it.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to comment here. We're thrilled to see how much interest water biking generates in SF and around the country. Just want to make one point very clear here - the Schiller X1 was designed for fun, sport and leisure, not as a dedicated commuting vehicle for crossing the SF Bay! That said, we'll let our customers decide how, where and when to ride their bikes like any other manufacturer of bikes or watercraft or cars for that matter. The X1 merges the best of cycling and water sports, enabling people of all athletic abilities to have an amazing ride out on the water without the buses, cars, potholes, exhaust, fuel, trailers and storage issues. Yes there are unique hazards out on the water particularly on the SF Bay. And being that we at Schiller Sports, Inc live and ride on this body of water, we designed a bike that is safe, stable and sea worthy. We care very much about rider safety here on the Bay and everywhere and will always do our best to make our customers aware of the need to check on tides, currents, winds, etc as well as wearing a coast guard approved PFD before going out on the water. And at the same time, the X1 is meant for enjoying on waterways around the world, not just San Francisco. Remember how the cycling community scoffed at bikers going down Mt. Tam forty some odd years ago? Why would anyone ride a bike down a mountain?? And now we have mountain biking. Water biking is no different and we are only just beginning...
