Dryer died again...
« on: August 03, 2014, 01:16:06 PM »
This appliance war is never-ending...

So, my dryer stopped heating up. It turns on, blows air, just no heat.

I checked the thermal breaker for continuity, it seems to conduct electricity fine. So, either the gas is not turning on, or it's not lighting. How and what would I test?

Check flame sensor first, black box with two wires on top of burner, and then the primary and secondary coils, two round solenoids on the gas valve. Lot's of youtube on how to check them. I guess I left out the ignitor. They tend to crack on dryers due to the vibration.

Yeah, check the ignitor.

I just had to replace mine a few weeks ago. On my dryer (Kenmore), there was a little plastic badge on the front panel near the lower left corner. Popping it off yielded a hole for looking inside to see if the ignitor was operating and, if so, if the burner ignited.

Yeah... I should probably just go home. I read the title and thought "When did he die the first time?"

I appear not to be firing on all cylinders this Monday.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Looks like ignitor is the winner.

My understanding is, it's basically a heating coil, and so should have continuity. It doesn't.

Looks like I'm off shopping.

Yeah should be able to ohm it out. Depending on model, you can sometimes see the crack.

Well, that wasn't it.

Replaced ignitor, no dice.

Should the gas flow for a bit, even if the ignitor isn't on? There is no gas flow that I can hear or feel.

On mine, gas doesn't flow until the ignitor is almost white hot.  YMMV.

I've also accidently cracked the new ignitor, that sucked having to buy it twice.

Does the new ignitor glow?

Ignitor should glow. Gas coil opens, if flame on second coil opens ignitor goes out.

Turned out the flame sensor was bad. I swear it was good when I started checking this stuff last week...

So, new ignitor and flame sensor later, it works.
