Yes.  I've hand made a few denim items, and I just got through sewing three patches into a worn-but-too-comfy-to-toss pair of 501s over the weekend.  Use a thinner needle and some beeswax.

Thimbles and a sailor's palm. Have you ever sewn sailcloth by hand? It's like denim but heavier and whiter. Plus one on the beeswax.

Just because someone can do something doesn't mean they want to. I"ll gladly pay the local tailor to do my sewing.
