Two panty waists offended by ROTC drills

Drills that have gone on for many years every Thursday.  Drills that involve ROTC cadets doing infantry drills with rubber ducks across the lawn.

Nobody protested ROTC on my campus . . . but then, the only "political" organization at the time was Tech Students for Reagan.

On the other hand, the ROTC guys did have to face "incoming" when drilling; we - errr, that is, I mean some person or persons unknown - would shell them with water balloons fired from large slingshots (called "bazoongaz" for some unknown reason) lofted from one dorm building over another, impacting on the drill field . . .    And then, that was only because the college's rifle range wasn't open to anyone except ROTC.

I think Mr. RemBrandt Miller is not only a wuss, but also a liar.

First he says this was in his original letter:

This kind of reckless behavior can trigger PTSD episodes in veterans, and even naive ROTC cadets who don't have nightmares of their own yet, should be more sensitive to this reality.

No mention that he suffered a PTSD episode, just a passing comment that it "can" trigger episodes in veterans. Indeed, he wrote that he recognized the "weapons" as rubber duckies, so he knew at the time that there was no reason to be alarmed.

But, after taking a bunch of (well-deserved) flack, he then came back with this:

I AM a combat veteran, and before you judgmental folks continue insulting me, take a moment and consider that seeing rifles pointed directly at me triggered a PTSD episode so intense I nearly had a seizure.

So which is it, Rembrandt? Did you recognize the weapons as fakes, or did you have a seizure? Or (third choice) are you such a wimp that a couple of rubber guns sends you over the edge?

The problem that I see regarding this "trigger event" is that the rifles were merely simulations with no working trigger and no live ammo.

I'll bet that if these two had been told that the young ROTC cadets were practicing anti-terrorist tactics they would have been asking if they could bring lemonade and cookies for the cadets at their next drill.

They would have loved the air assault drills we did with a Chinook on the football field.

Only problem we had was everyone wanted selfies with us while we were doing stuff. Honestly, local NG lent us damn near anything and the school was very supportive. Football stadium as an LZ, pool for full uniform swimming, etc. Only rule was no live ammo in weapons.

Hell, I didn't exactly trust the ROTC cadets with live ammo. Hell, they nearly killed themselves disassembling an M2.

Think your typical Second Lieutenant. Now imagine them with less experience and training. Terrified? You damn well should be.

Funny that the Air Force is using replica rifles to allow them to learn take-down and such, since darned few Air Force types actually use personal weapons anymore.

As an undergrad in college, once it came out that the ROTC cadets were training with "simulated weapons" they were often teased about being "toy soldiers playing with their toy guns."

(Never heard the term "rubber duckie" though . . . )

We used them sometimes in training in Boot camp, but were issued rifles to take care of for the duration.

We used them for the bayonet assault course and the night infiltration course.  We were rather grateful that we could hose off the mud rather than spend hours on our real rifles.  Also, guys could go ape**** with their bayonets on the assault course without worrying about breaking any (more) of Uncle Sam's precious crap.

I'm pretty sure I never saw a rubber duck after basic training, and then like only once I think.
