I recall the old Irwin Allen series "The Time Tunnel" did an episode where the two heroes wound up on Krakatoa.   There was also an old movie from circa 1970 called "Krakatoa, East of Java."  The real volcanic island was west of Java, in the Sundra Strait.   Hollywood ... 


Somewhere I have a DVD documentary about the event.  The tidal wave it caused killed tens of thousands and really smashed up a LOT of ships -- leaving there hulks miles inland.
Ominously, the volcano has been rebuilding itself and is now called, IIRC, "Son of Krakatoa."

I went off on a wikipedia tangent over that, reading about global cooling from Krakatoa, then the year without a summer from the 1815 Tambora eruption, then on to the little ice age.

Why the hell are people worried about global warming again? Let worldwide average temps drop by 2 deg C and we all starve.

I'm still convinced that part of the little ice age was increasing urbanization and industry fueled by burning particulate rich fuels that created a sort of industrial winter. Imagine cities burning wood and coal for all of their needs, then stopping in the early 20th century.
