Cree 3-way LED lamp, recommended
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:41:54 PM »
The 3-way lamp in my nighstand lamp called it quits this morning. As I had no more 3-way bulbs in my stash I decided to try the new Cree 3-way LED lamp after I discovered it had finally reached a tolerable price point.

I am impressed. The color and coverage are similar to the Cree single-wattage lamps I already have and like. It has three distinct steps in output and appears equivalent to the 30-70-100 incandesent it replaced. The only downside is size. It is roughly the same profile as an incandescent but scaled up about ten percent. Just big enough that I had to slightly reform the snugly form-fitting lampshade support wires before the lamp would seat in the socket. Lamps or fixtures with small lamp-access ports could be problematic.

If you're thinking about converting you might give it a try.

Even though I work for Cree I get no discount on the bulbs. I just bought 2 of our 18-watt ("100W replacement") bulbs for my stairway for $20 each. They need to be bright, and are on much of the day. If you stand next to the fixture with incandescents you can feel the heat radiating. Although the bulbs were bigger they fit ok and I was happy that the output was actually brighter (confirmed by digicam) than the incandescents they replaced and the color is almost perfect. I have a couple of the "60W" as well.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I've been completely happy with my 60W Cree bulbs. I've not been so pleased with the 100W ones. While the light is great, they've not been reliable for me. I just lost my 2nd 100W bulb in my utility room. 1st one conked out in a day, 2nd one lasted a few months, went to turn it on yesterday and it just flickered for awhile, then shut off entirely and is now completely dead. I'll be going with Philips for any 100W needs, at least for the near future.

Are you contacting them?  IIRC all Crees have a 10 year warranty.

I've been using these from Home Depot for a couple of months.

They're 60 watt (they also come in 40 watt) and supposedly a 100 watt will be on the market soon. They also come in different color temperatures.

I have one in my bedroom in a bedside lamp on a timer and another in the living room. I'm happy enough with them that I'm seriously considering replacing the rest of the lights in the bedroom and the lights in the bathroom.

I became an LED convert because of the Philips products. I'm looking more closely at Cree as their current products are more efficient and run slightly cooler. I'm not a fan of the fragile glass globe wih the sticky-feeling safety coating, but I can live with it.

I have been putting in Cree 75W bulbs as my old incandescent/CFLs burn out.

They do, and I would, but I didn't retain the receipt and proof of purchase, both of which are required. Even if I had, I'm not terribly interested in then paying to ship said failed bulb, receipt, and proof of purchse to them at my expense, then waiting 6-8 weeks to receive a replacement or refund, all for a light bulb. I get bitten twice, I just stop buying that item for awhile. If/when I do buy them again, I'll be sure to hold on to the receipt and UPC to expand my options.

We just launched a new simpler design; I know nothing about it except what I read in the news.

Nice!

Even nicer is the current-gen lamps will likely go on clearance soon. At a $5 price point I could convert the rest of the house, inside and out, for less than $100.
