1979 ammo reliablility?
« on: November 19, 2014, 07:59:21 PM »
Have some reloaded ammo reloaded in 79 (.357 in JHP) that was going bang every time I pulled the trigger with it back in the mid 90's. Any reason it might not now?

I have .22 from the mid '70's that still works. I would think they would work but make sure they feel right and make a hole in the target before sending another round down the barrel.

I have 7.62x25 ammo from the 1950's that goes "bang" every time.  (and the necks usually split)

Unless it got wet or really, really hot, you should be fine.

Keep an ear out for squib loads or under powered loads until you shoot a bit of it. I can't see it being dangerous beyond that, but I am no expert.

About a decade ago, I shot some 45ACP ammo that was head-stamped 1943.  It worked flawlessly.

I've fired .30 carbine with WW2 date stamps and it's worked.
As others have said, if it's been stored well it is probably OK.  If it's really covered with verdigris I'd toss it.

My current Garand and 03A3 ammo sez  SL 43 on the base. I found one gloriously corroded primer, but most of the ammo is pristine. Trying to save the AP of the same stamp for a rainy day, especially the one box with an unbroken seal, looks collectible. I don't particularly wait long to clean the guns after shooting it either.

The OP said these were reloads.  Is there any concern they won't keep as long as the military surplus ammo?

I can't see why not, just asking.

Sure, who knows what care went into the reloads? More variables than an industrial line I'm sure. Random case lube, corrosion from fingerprints, who knows. But if it goes bang, shoot it.
