Networking guys...
« on: November 25, 2014, 12:40:27 PM »
A garden center client of mine just put in an environmental control system and I'm having a hard time getting it online. They need two ports forwarded, 1122, and 80.  Their router is a Netgear WNR2000v3 with the latest firmware. I forwarded both ports and 1122 is working fine, however 80 is still blocked. I had their ISP open it; but its still showing as blocked. I can access the server via browser from inside the network with no problems. Access attempts from outside show up in the router's log, but there's no option for actual firewall settings other then forwarding. I added the server to the DMZ; but get the exact same result. Any ideas? Their ISP is Optonline, and from what I've read in the past they have pushed corrupt files to their docsis3 modems so that port 80 shows as open on their end; but is still actually closed. I'm at a standstill here, I figured that if port 80 is blocked nothing should show in the log. However if its a firewall issue, once I added the server to the DMZ, it should get a response. Any suggestions, or corrections to my thinking? Thanks

Replace the router with a different known good router, stream port 80 traffic to see what happens.

If it is not blocked, it's the Netgear router.
If it's blocked, it's the ISP.

Don't know that exact model of router, but is there a management interface on the netgear unit listening on port 80 on the outside?  If so you should be able to change the port that router is using for management, or at least tell them what the problem is so they can deal with it.

Thanks guys. Turns out the ISP tech never rebooted the modem. Simple issue, my bad for assuming they would perform that one vital step in the process... Network troubleshooting is so much fun from 1100 miles away.

Did you clear your cash and cookies?

I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

You are the perfect person to phone-tech my mother through uploading pics to Facebook. Easy gig. With your experience and expertise it shiuldn't take more than a couple hours and and 30 or 40% increase in blood pressure per call.  I'm giving her your number.  >:D

Teamviewer can be your best friend in the world. Older people seem to learn more easily if they can watch you do things a few times. Plus, they don't get as offended if they can't see that they've driven you to drink by making you explain "right click" for the thirtieth time. All you need is a solid internet connection, and "spotty" cell service. That way you can drop the call when you can't take anymore, and just finish up whatever you were teaching her to do yourself in 30 seconds instead of 45 minutes...

I've discovered TeamViewer lately and I can't recommend it enough.  Simple interface, no registration necessary.  Just have them download it, run it, give you the session ID and password, and you are good to go.

Just remember, it can't be used for commercial purposes unless you pay for it. I'm very fond of it as well. Works very well on Windows 8.1 Surface tablets, and many others don't. For the local network, we use VNC.

PM me your email and I'll send you their contact info. One client's been running his place on it for about 2.5 years and was happy enough to recommend it to his inlaws. I'd guess his place is in the 40,000 sq/ft range. Inlaw place number one is 180,000 sq/ft and place two is 150,000 sq/ft. First guy has been thrilled with it since it was put in.
