Next year the tax on diesel will rise two cents, which should reduce consumption will taking in over a billion dollars in revenue. Meanwhile, drivers who trade their diesel cars for electric ones could get up to $13,500 in incentives to make the switch.

The French?  Among all the other words that do not describe the French, which are the two above?  About the only one that does describe them is "progressive" and I think Valls is using it in an alternative meaning just this one time.  Double entendre?  The French invented that, didn't they?

Linked article said 80% of all cars in France were diesel . . . sounds like their current rulers want to alienate 80% of French motorists.

May make the next French election interesting . . .

How much freight could an electric truck haul, if an electric truck could haul freight?

I knew a guy in 1995 or so who owned a Diesel Peugeot. Can't recal his name.
He was spending several months in town, with relatives, doing an internship or something.

We ended up in the same crowd with Rob, who at the time owned and ran a successful import service garage.
This guy heard about Rob, introduced himself, and asked about his business.

As Rob handed over one of his business card, he asked the guy what kind of car he had.

"Peugeot (model#) diesel."

Rob plucked the card back out of the guy's hand and said "You're on your own."

7-11 was a part time job.

It could haul twice as much, but only 1/6 as far!

I wondered about that, and locomotives.  But of course locos are diesel-ELECTRIC, so I guess it's OK.

"1/6th as far."  Sergeant Bob, you are eeeevvvvillll.  >:D

Isn't this the Prime Minister/government that chased all their "rich" people out of the country??

And we act surprised when they do (more) econominally stupid stuff??

(not to mention that diesels run much cleaner then they used to.)

Not disagreeing with anyone here. But I want you to know one thing. France's energy policy (translation: nuclear power) is several orders of magnitude better run than the US. They build reactors, educate the public, safely store nuclear waste, reprocess it for reuse as additional fuel, and replace reactors as needed. Think about that for a moment. The French are significantly more rational than the US when it comes to energy.

So, while (quite rightly) mocking the French, remember on at least one measurable level, they're a hundred times more intelligent and level headed than the US.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Yes, I agree that we should be emulating their nuclear policy. Or that of a number of other nations, where not only their mainstream general populations, but also their mainstream "environmentalists" get it in regards to nuclear energy. I was sad to see Germany reverse their direction regarding nuclear power.

If you'll follow the link, the current government in France wants to cut their reliance on nuclear power.

Of course, I'd be happy if we got to the 50% of their power that that cut would represent, but still, they're moving away from nuclear power right now.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I often wonder if the anti-nuke sentiments that are being cultivated in the west have anything to do with Russia having a glut of oil and natural gas available for sale . . .

Possible, in the sense that it's a holdover from the Cold War anti-nuclear weapons protests in Western Europe, but I'm more inclined to ascribe it to the Gaia-worship cult mentality and general anti-industry/pollution philosophy of the broader Green movement.

I remember when, a couple years ago, propane was going for $1.09 per gallon, I thought that converting my Exploder to propane might be a good idea. Of course, the price soon went up to $4 something per gallon.
