Why Can't We Watch New Movies at Home?

You can.
Just as soon as it comes out on DVD! >:D >:D

Meh.  There are a half dozen CamRip torrents out within 24 hours of anything worthwhile hitting the theaters.  Usually with less background noise than the local theater and good enough video quality.

 ;)

Well, it's what I do now anyways 95% of the time.

There are few movies I want to rush out to see. The last ones were the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Serenity. I've been to a few since then because friends wanted to go, but I can't even remember the names. Most everything else, I'm fine waiting 3-6 months. I'm just looking at, with most everything else going to "watch it when and where you want", why it doesn't happen with new releases.

As for theater distractions, again, I'm not the best data point, but I've had issues possibly 25% of the time I've gone. I find picking a weekday matinee while school is still in session, around a week or two after the initial release date, will minimize distractions. Within a few days of release and prime times, my "bad experience" numbers probably go up to 80% or so.

One of the reasons I stopped going to see movies in theaters was because the manager of the one I disliked least just about asked me to stop coming.  He said it was "not fair" that I asked for my money back because he would not do anything about the cellphone conversations, conversations between folks at least a dozen rows apart, and the failure to clean up - or at least pretend to make an effort to - between showings.

Strangely, it has not seemed to have bothered me one little bit that I no longer partake of the movie theater experience.

stay safe.

I know this is a joke, but I'm curious: How many people have experienced a rude patron who ruined (or negatively affected) their movie?

And, as a second part: how many times has that happened?

I'm certain I've never had a movie ruined by rude patrons. I'm fairly certain I've never even been affected by others. Is my experience uncommon?

Only one occasion that "ruined" the movie. The person was a young man with obvious severe mental development issues. He repeated one word. Usually not that loudly, but it was during "The Grey" with Liam Neeson, which has several quiet scenes.

Like everyone else in the theater, I was annoyed, but...  What the heck are you going to do? It wasn't his fault he had autism or some other severe issue. I'm not the type of person to demand that such people be locked away from the rest of humanity, nor demand a refund. So I just did my best to tolerate it.

The only ruined movie I ever had here or back in Clear Lake TX was a malfunction that stopped the movie and they gave everyone rain checks.  No other significant issues.

Then again, I usually go to the first showing in the afternoon.
I like the experience of the big bucket of greasy buttery popcorn and big soda with a big screen and good sound system.

Hell, only time I go to movies is when it's to damned hot to stay home.  The theater is usually good for proper air conditioning.  >:D

That was one good thing when I was living in Dallas; 106F, and $3-4 at the dollar theater would let me nap all afternoon in 65F comfort :)

Maybe its some form of ADHD or something*, but I can't sit for an entire movie, I get bored. I don't go to movies, and it has to be something really good and different for me to watch it at home.

*Or maybe most movies are formulaic and predictable- just the same stories told over and over again with different characters and special effects.

The wife and I like to catch mid week afternoon showings. On numerous trips we have had the theater to ourselves. We usually manage to go 3-4 times a year. I'm kind of looking forward to catching Guardians of the Galaxy when it comes out.

Thread necro, mostly because "The Interview" is now sorta testing what I wrote about in the OP. It will be interesting to see the numbers from the dual theater / streaming release.

Kinda bummed that it's this movie doing the test. There's a lot of built-in bias that will bring the theater numbers up for what otherwise looks to have possibly been a stinker that would have gone to DVD in a hurry without the North Korean hype.

Also, side note, another reason I would like to see straight to streaming release options is because the movie I mentioned in the OP, the latest Planet of the Apes movie, sucked (IMO) and I would have been pretty ticked off to spend $15 to sit through it in the theater.
