You know things are about at the bottom of the pit when the combined IQ of two or more people is still less than that of a tree.

Although I will suggest, in their defense, it's not about whether or not the door actually locked.  It's all about what they thought.  (Please see line above again.)

You would think over two days trying the door would occur to them. 

However, the article said the cops found drug paraphanalia, but no drugs.  I realize that could mean a lot of things, but something tells me they had a way to pass the time and it wasn't a deck of cards.
