IRS Backup Tapes
« on: February 11, 2015, 11:06:57 AM »
Gee, what a shocker. Exactly what everyone who has even a cursory knowledge of enterprise system knows: The IRS had backups of the "completely destroyed and unrecoverable" emails.

Of course now that time has passed with the Emmys, and Oscars, and "yeah sports!" and "Look! A butterfly!" it will likely all be for naught.

I think if a few bureaucrats were tarred and feathered or put up against the wall peridocally it might pour encourager les autres.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Yep. The IRS lied.

Very very few folks of any significant size lack backups. And usually with emails live in a mailbox for some time, stretching them across multiple backups. Maybe not any single email, but statically 80,000 emails will be duplicated across multiple tapes.

Imagine that, the IRS lied

pretty much anyone who has ever done IT work for the .gov knew that when it first happened.

Wouldn't the IRS be breaking the law if they didn't have their email backed up?

Not that it would matter.

And anyone in Missouri that has paid attention to the news in the past eight years.
