A few years ago I enrolled in a citizens' police academy in the next town from where I live. The class met one night a week for twelve weeks, with each week explaining a different aspect of police work.

One class was on K-nine work. The department had two dogs, because one was old and getting ready to retire, so they brought in the replacement to ensure continuity. It was pretty interesting to see the two dogs working together.

The officer assigned to the new dog drove an Explorer. The officer with the old dog drove a classic Crown Vic. The driver's side rear window of each vehicle stays down so the dog can jump out when needed. At the end of the demonstration, the handler of the new dog gave him a command to get back in the car, which he did by jumping in through the open window.

Then the handler of the old dog said, "Watch this," with a grin, then he gave his dog the command to get back in the car. The dog trotted over to the Crown Vic, ignored the open window, grabbed the door handle in his teeth, opened the door, and stepped in.

Once again, old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

The officer said he didn't teach the dog to do that. The dog just got tired of jumping through windows.

With old age comes dignity.

Or so they keep telling me.

Probably in the hope that it will eventually happen. :old:

They make car doors relatively easy to open.  The animals see us repeatedly hook our hands on the handle and pull.  This isn't a door knob that has to be grabbed and turned.  You don't need thumbs.  Eventually some animals are going to realize they can do it also.  There are lots of videos of dogs and other animals opening doors with those quarter turn handles or push the latch up on a chain link fence gate.

When the animal works out how to unlock the door first (not by accident), then I'll show some concern.

The video calls that cruelty.  I have seen squirrels fall out of trees lots of times without getting hurt.  The biggest issue to me is the way it is set up, the bowl essentially smacks them as it launches.

Despite the video lamenting the throws as 'cruel', I've heard of people watching the squirrel immediately run back to the launcher(the self-resetting ones at least) for another ride...  Also, there's a battery operated one that's intended to toss the squirrel off so it can't get to the bird feeders.  Apparently the squirrels, at least some of them, treat it like a roller coaster, riding it until it tosses them off, then they get right back on.  Ride it for 20-30 minutes, until the batteries run out, then they get the food.

Just saw one get knocked out of a tree by one of his buddies in front of my house the other day- must have been a fight over mates or food or something. Critter fell at least 30', got back up, and ran to a different tree.
I take all of my bread ends, pop them in the toaster then soak them with hamburger or bacon grease. When the kids come over, I put them (the bread ends) out of the squirrel feeder, sometimes they are huge entertainment.

When I was a kid, we had a dog (Keeshond mix) that loved to bark at squirrels.  A few times the squirrels fell out of the tree.  They would always just jump up and run back to the tree.  They can fluff their tail and spread their body and slow their fall.  I think the squirrels liked to play as much as she did since some days they would come down to a low spot and just wave their tales until she saw them.  That dog would climb up trees sometimes to get after the squirrels.  There is still a live oak growing at an angle that she could get up pretty far.  She just couldn't get back down.  Luckily, it was only about 10 feet high 50 feet from the ground.  Never saw her get hurt jumping down....soft sandy soil maybe.

A friend's dog, now long dead, quickly mastered the lever type door handles and would let herself out when she wished.  When she was ready to go back inside, she did not attempt the handle, she rang the bell.
