A few years ago I enrolled in a citizens' police academy in the next town from where I live. The class met one night a week for twelve weeks, with each week explaining a different aspect of police work.
One class was on K-nine work. The department had two dogs, because one was old and getting ready to retire, so they brought in the replacement to ensure continuity. It was pretty interesting to see the two dogs working together.
The officer assigned to the new dog drove an Explorer. The officer with the old dog drove a classic Crown Vic. The driver's side rear window of each vehicle stays down so the dog can jump out when needed. At the end of the demonstration, the handler of the new dog gave him a command to get back in the car, which he did by jumping in through the open window.
Then the handler of the old dog said, "Watch this," with a grin, then he gave his dog the command to get back in the car. The dog trotted over to the Crown Vic, ignored the open window, grabbed the door handle in his teeth, opened the door, and stepped in.
Once again, old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
The officer said he didn't teach the dog to do that. The dog just got tired of jumping through windows.
