Toilet question
« on: March 11, 2015, 11:47:46 AM »
I've replaced toilets and toilet gaskets before without a problem. I've had a leaking wax ring for quite some time, and finally replaced it last Saturday. I removed the tank to make the job easier.

When I put the tank back on, I used new gaskets and tank bolts, and a new seal for the discharge pipe. It leaked. I went to Home Depot and bought another kit and replaced them again. Still leak.

The leak is apparently coming from the seal for the discharge pipe on the tank going into the base. I seated it properly, or I'm pretty sure I did. I haven't worked on this toilet before, and I see no name brand.

I've never used plumbers putty on toilets before, and have never seen instructions to do so.

Any idea as to where the problem may lie?

I already bought and installed a new wax ring and other parts.

Tank has a crack?

You used the correct seal below the tank right? Should be a soft rubber gasket there, the wax ring goes on the flange to the sewer pipe.

Also, did you use new everything - tank bolts, inner and outer bolt seals, and discharge tube seal?

Most common cause of this happening is:

1. Getting the tank seated incorrectly on the new sponge foam gasket.

2. Not assembling the tank bolts in the correct order, leading to improper pressure on the sponge foam gasket.

If you mean it's leaking where the tank meets the toilet, if you have hard or mineral laden water, make sure to check for any buildup and if you have some, remove it to get a clean seal. Vinegar will take care of it, though you might need to let it soak for a bit.

Yep. Used the correct parts, and new parts: wax ring, tank bolts, rubber washers, and new discharge tube seal. Everything assembled as it should be. No hard water buildup.

There's no cracks. I think the problem is that the generic discharge tube seal sold by Home Depot isn't a proper fit. The design was slightly different than the original. I'm going to try to get one from the manufacturer. I can feel it leaking when the toilet is flushed, but it stops leaking after that.

What one did you buy from Home Despot? Danco?

If so, toss it and get one of the Fluidmaster ones.

Just thought of something... Are you putting the gasket in the hole in the back of the bowl, or are you putting it on the stub on the tank? If the former, you're doing it wrong.

Take a look at this to see what applies...

Mike, I don't remember the brand. I tried putting one on in the base, and then tried the second on the discharge tube. There was a red fiber washer that came with it, and it's supposed to go on top of the rubber seal against the tank. I took a flashlight and peeked between the tank and the base, and that gasket isn't flat. It has a curve at 9, 12, 3 and 6 o'clock. Don't know if the regularity is accidental, but that doesn't seem conducive to a good seal.

What make toilet is it?

I've never heard of that kind of seal.

Hit up your local plumbing supply house instead of Home Depot.

I ordered from the manufacturer. Same price as Home Despot (except for shipping), and would think they'd get the parts right.
