More computer tricks
« on: March 18, 2015, 08:07:46 PM »
My old desktop computer is running Windows XP. New one is on the way, but for now I'm still using the old one. Recently, when I boot up Windows has taken to starting MSN messenger without my permission. If I close the pop-up Messenger window, I get a message telling me the Messenger is running in the background so I can receive messages. Of course, nobody sends me messages, and I don't WANT to receive messages.

How can I kill this -- permanently?

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?

Click the start button, in the search bar type "msconfig" without the quotes. In the box that opens go to the start up tab, find Messenger in the list and uncheck it. Hit apply, then ok, then restart the pc. When it reboots a window will pop up about system configuration, check the "do not show this again" box then hit ok.

That seems to have worked -- thanks.

There's a LOT of "stuff" on that list, and all named very cryptically. I wish I knew how many I could safely nuke to get back to a lean, mean machine.

Generally most of them.  Try disabling one per reboot, seeing if it affects anything.

I like to look over the list in MSCONFIG one line at a time, looking for the executable file's name, then do an Internet search on the file name.  I can usually make a determination of keep/don't keep with the first or second search result.

Or post a screen shot.

FYI, you can make the columns larger by clicking and dragging the separator lines at the top.

don't forget a screenshot of the contents under the "services" tab (with the box to hide Microsoft stuff checked).  Crapware lurks there too.
