Adding a backup camera to a 2012 SUV
« on: March 21, 2015, 02:20:29 PM »
GMC Acadia.  It's very difficult to see what you're doing using the tiny mirrors, and my dad and brother want to add a backup camera.  Makes sense, but you can't get an OEM package except from the factory...  GM won't sell it as parts.  Also they really don't need an expensive "navigation system".

1) If I put in a camera system that replaces the rearview mirror, is the image big enough to really be useful?  what is it, about 2" x 3"?
2) If I install a 2-DIN aftermarket stereo with a 7" touch screen, will it come on and display the camera automatically when the car goes in reverse?

The camera can be powered off the backup lamp, so the camera comes on automatically.  Don't know if the receiver will detect the video signal and auto-switch to it.  I guess worse case, you have to touch the screen and select the camera input before you back up.

Either way, I'll need to find a professional installer.  I could replace the stereo myself but have higher priority projects to get done while I'm in town.  I'm not sure I could install the camera and run the wires.

I have one of each. The mirror is a wireless deal in an 88 f250 utility body. Was easy DIY install works good. The size issue isn't one. So close to my face it's good. I have a cheap pyle CD player and paid 150 to have a cam hard wired to it. Works good too. Cam was about 100. Best buy install another 150 but included mounting the CD player.
I paid 80 bucks on woot for the DIY rear view mirror one

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I kinda recall some of the more sophisticated 2-camera dashcam system have backup-camera capability. Thsn you'd have backup cam and liability-protection dashcam in one.

I'm putting a backup cam and nav in my F 150 as part of it's Service Life Extension Program.  The one I'm using, yes, it comes on and goes to the cam automatically when the camera comes on (wired to the back up lights)  Installation could be easy, although I'm making mine fancier then strictly needed.

I have played with the wireless cams a bit, and would avoid them.  My smartphone causes interference, and the wired cam only takes one wire run to the dash.

This is the unit I'm using: cheap ebay nav/camera

I had a big Fresnel lens pasted on the back window of my camper which helped backing up a lot.  Don't know if that would be suitable for your situation... just a thought.

Less than $10.  Might be an interim solution, then the kids could have fun with it.
