People in town near me had similar happen. A call that was traced to an out of state number said that the caller was holed up in the house with a hostage child and several guns. SWAT responded. Fortunately the owners were out shopping and not at home to get ripped out of the house at gunpoint. Or worse.

Calls like that should be a felony. If I call (anonymously) and say someone has child porn hidden on a partitioned drive their life is likely ruined by the time it is settled. Nation of snitches.

I'm so contrarian that I didn't respond to the thread.

Ironic that the husband is researching "cyber-bullying" for his degree.

This kind of thing should absolutely be a felony.

When they locate the creep who makes the false call, they should be able to "SWAT" him/her in revenge --- just to convince them what it feels like ...... >:D

This kind of thing really pisses me off, especially because it's so hard to track the little cowards down and give them the beating this behavior deserves.  I also think it really says something about our cops in the last 10-15 years that they have become so predictably willing to go full kick in the door that they can be used in this way.multiple fraked up issues here.

I do get to brush off my favorite Red October quote though:

I have some sympathy for the time of the essence aspect; but shouldn't there be some degree of due inquiry?
Hmmm, anonymous pre-pubescent 'complainant' who kept snickering on an out of state number with no verifiable particulars...
More common sense, less tacticool is the first and only choice decision making.

Folks use VOIP to call in some situation, so in fairness sometimes they make it look like the home number. Sometimes people die before the police realize it's an outsourced assassination attempt. For a while, cops seemed to make it SOP to shoot pets on sight.

Apparently it's quite 'common' in gaming and SJW communities.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Guy who was shot for carrying a BB gun, because a caller claimed it was a rifle, that victim loaded it, and victim was aiming it at people.

It's a new term, but folks have been giving false information to the police for quite a long time.

The BB gun that he picked up in a Walmart?  I wonder if the caller is the one who unwrapped it and put it in the wrong aisle somewhere as bait.

Oh yeah, that one...not sure if that's technically "SWATing" though. Related, but not exactly same.

Not sure if domestic terrorism is the right charge, but I think the sentence is about right.  >:D

ETA: Actually, I hadn't read that all the way through before I typed that:

Quote
Defense lawyers told the courtroom that Horner, who goes by the gamertag BadAssDwg69, was upset after being repeatedly beaten by a fellow gamer at Battlefield 4. After obtaining the rival gamers information, prosecutors say Horner called police and reported a murder/hostage situation at the home. SWAT team then raided the house, shooting and critically injuring the “Livestreamer’s” father in the process.

I think the little *expletive deleted*er got off easy.

Fortunately for the supposed father, unfortunate that a little *expletive deleted*it of a SWATTER wasn't given hard time, it's fake:
