Information being available unfortunately does not equate to information being known. As the article mentions, and as GLAAD's own numbers agree with, homosexuals are significantly over-represented in media, this combined with all the media coverage of LGBT issues and non-issues leads to people vastly over-estimating the proportion of homosexuals in the population.

From the source article, I see that Americans also overestimate the numbers of Blacks and Hispanics in the population.

I figured out from watching the first 2 seasons of Torchwood (I quit watching after that) that *everybody* in England and Wales is gay.  Not sure about the other islands.
