Viking to the white courtesy phone.

It seems like a lot of Swedish bands sing in English. Ghost B.C., Amon Amarth, and Burning Saviors are bands I really like and they are all sung in English, although Burning Saviors does have a few songs in Swedish. Is this a common thing? What's up with that?

Abba was doing that 40 years ago. It's to sell records (CDs, DVDs, whatever), silly person.

Heck, Abba also recorded in Spanish and they were popular in South America.

Didn't know they were from Sweden.
How exactly does that help sell records in your home country that speaks a different language?

It doesn't. How many potential record (CD/DVD) buyers do you think there are in Sweden? How many do you think there are in the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand combined?

Everyone in their target group here in Sweden speaks English (or atleast believes they do), so writing songs in English instead Swedish is of no/little consequence for the bands, but of immense benefit for an international career. Lyrics that people can understand and sing/shout along to helps selling out shows.

Everyone has to take English in school. When I was in school, we had our first English lessons in 4th grade, but I'm sure they start earlier these days. Also, movies & tv series are never dubbed, with the exception of films/series meant for small children.

Apparently it works. I don't know if you have a Swedish accent, but your written English flows naturally and is more correct than that of a lot of Americans.
