Suggestion for very thin tip for small hub puller?
« on: July 30, 2015, 02:15:30 PM »
I will be getting in the mail a hub puller for very small motors. The center screw that presses against the hub shaft will be too thick. I need something thinner than 1/16". I was thinking of having the center screw of the hub puller go into the threaded part of a basketball inflation needle, and then use the needle itself (shortened) to press again the hub shaft. The inflation needles are hollow, though, and I'm sure would break.

I thought about taking a .308 bullet and drilling the base for the center screw, but I suspect the lead would deform under pressure.

I thought about just grinding the center screw of the hub puller, but I don't know that I can grind it so the point is centered.

I'm trying to think of another something that would work as a tip for the center screw.

Any suggestions?

Buy a 1/16" pin punch from Harbor Freight or the like, and chop to size.  You  could even thread the back end if you wanted to get fancy.

Alternatively, take a small piece of round stock (metal) Drill a hole in it with a small drill bit of whatever size (1/16, 3/64, whatever) You can then either get drill rod, or use a broken drill bit as the pusher.

Or if none of that work, give me some real measurements and I'll turn a stepped pusher for you.

Secondary suggestion:  Stop crashing your drone.

Yeah, flying it in your hallway must be hazardous.

some ideas.

1- Buy a pair of pliers. Grind one side to slip under the gear or whatever it is. Drill and thread a small pin into the other side. Can't be much resistance on a 1/16" shaft.

2- If you can hold the center of the puller in a drill chuck, spin it up against a grinder you can get it pretty close that way.

3-support the gear on a block and tap the shaft out with a pin punch, heat the gear up with a soldering iron first.

That could work.

I haven't crashed my drone. I've been buying gimbals from ones that have crashed. I keep a broken gimbal on mine except when I know I'll be doing some video recording, just in case I crash.

Check your local real hardware and hobby stuff store for rod stock.  The K&S "music wire" is pretty darn tough for any given diameter, and less brittle than drill bits.  Should be a red rack near the hobbyist sizes of sheet brass and similar.  Your nearest R/C model dealer may have something similar in stock too.

I've got it. Take one of those eyeglass screwdriver kits, use the pointed shaft, cut the pointy shaft short, and lock it in place with the collar. Then cut the handle right behind the collar and drill a shallow hole in the handle for the hub puller's screw to sit in.

It was sitting on my desk right in front of me.

I was going to suggest that.  Glad you found a solution.

Dang it, now there's nothing I can pull a thread drift on.

If he's flying in a hallway, he really should be using a sensor.

But will it be wearing one of those orange belts with the strap that goes over the shoulder?
