Calling all Free Market True Believers- need book recommendation
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:14:29 PM »
There is a new hire, I am working with. He is originally from China. He is a Mech Engineer, he immigrated to Canada and now has a position here in Illinois.

Over lunch we started talking politics, unsurprisingly he is convinced of wealth redistribution. He believes that an outcome of capitalism is a few very rich and many poor. And that it is the repsonsibility of the rich to give to the poor, by taxes.

What would be a good book debunking some these socialist ideologies? Please suggest something simple and short for him to read and consider. Anything Ayn Rand, would probably be too long and compicated. I am looking for something more direct.

Who knows, maybe one day I can take him shooting.

Gerd Olafsen (probably misspelled), Cowboy Capitalism.  Explores all the myths that especially German politicians like to exploit when referring to America.  Among them, the US unemployment rate is so low because we throw everyone in jail, employers can fire employees for no reason at all and thus everyone's job is constantly at risk, and other gems.  He shows through agonizing analysis of data that the US has consistently outperformed European economies and delivered more and better jobs and a higher standard of living.
After that, Milton Friedman, Free To Choose.
After that Thomas Sowell Economics for the American Citizen (probably got the title wrong).

Aside from reading, just drive around town so he sees the good and the bad.  The key is that there are more economic middle house houses than any other, plus the upper middle and on up.

Take him to a major shopping mall, as well as a Wal-Mart.

In any American city of any size, there's plenty of visible evidence of how well off the majority of the population really is.

And hunt up the URL of the Census.gov website.  That will show the percentiles of incomes and all the other info available about demographics.  Just as the website of the CDC and the DOJ give the lie to the anti-gun crowd.

He lived in Canada for 5 years, in a city near Detroit, I'm not sure any sight seeing in Peoria, IL will challenge what he has seen of Detroit. I'm sure he knows very well, how well off Americans are. What the missing part is the hidden assumptions of why we are so well off.

I speculate that in his eyes, China has so many people with so few resources, which is why they are poor. Where in my eyes, I see so many people poor because of the taxation and burden and oppression by the gov't. In my eyes, the huge population is an awesome resource that in a free society would yield great prosperity for everyone in thier nation.

I think I might want to use the example of Estonia posted here awhile back, but I'll probably need to do some research before opening my mouth.

"All the Trouble in the World" by P.J. O'Rourke.

Fun, easy to read, and educational as hell.

PJ is a national treasure, alongside Dave Barry and Robert Heinlein.

Thomas Sowell's Knowledge and Decisions was my first free market econ book and it convinced me so I'll recommend it.
