Looks like a dry sump system where the oil tank is removable and, I am guessing, contains a built in filter. I would assume they are reusable after draining, cleaning and having the filter replaced at a recovery/repair center for the next usage.

Using full-synthetic Castrol oil (6 quarts, I drive an older Cherokee) and a good Purolator filter, I do an oil change for about $35. I wonder what the price of these thingies is going to be.

I'm guessing considerably more than $35.

Probably for the first few years, but I would assume economies of scale would kick in if they (or something similar) become the standard. Also totally a guess, but if they're metered like it says they are, you can probably go longer between oil changes.

If one of the automakers start standardizing on this, it might be cheaper.  I think it really depends on what it takes to clean and prepare the old one for reuse.  It ought to be cheaper in the long run.

The biggest concern would be that each automaker would have 15 different sizes for different vehicles.  If they keep the sizes down to about 3, it might work out pretty good.  It would work ever better if the motor oil companies come up with standard designs that would/could be used across all vehicles.

The negative might be that the odds might go up for getting the wrong oil or a cartridge where someone forgot to install a filter.  Or maybe that cartridge still had a bunch of cleanser in it with or without oil.

I was also thinking in terms of the dealer/oil change places doing this and recycling the cartidges on site.  It might be simpler for places like Autozone to do an exchange similar to the propane tank exchanges.

And there needs to be a sensor that prevents engine start when the box is detached.

Another thing to break.

So would all the engine oil drain to the container when shut down or would some oil just stay in the engine?

But then how will I know if there is something wrong with my car if the professionals at Jiffy Lube aren't checking everything for me while changing the oil???

The engine runs a "dry sump" in that all (99%) of the oil is sucked out of a minimal "pan" and pumped to a catch tank (in this case, the module). There are check valves that prevent back-flow.
