The thrill of victory, the mania of defeat
« on: October 17, 2015, 03:40:35 AM »
Our local sporting club seems to have gone down in a pile of flaming wreckage against the Chicago Perennial Losers, so one might expect the Rag of Record to move on to other topics, or at least other teams.

Not so. When I check the StL Post-Disgrace website, every other article is postseason postmortem, and "What will the Cards do next year?!"

That's one problem with this stupid town, for which I cannot be blamed.  :old:

Well that explains why one very vocal member in my little circle of Facebook friends has suddenly gone silent. :)

Go cubs.

I find that I only root for a sports team if there's a non-sporty reason for it. I was hoping the Texans would beat the Bostonians in 2004, so it would match the Presidential election. And I'm hoping the Cubs win the World Series in 2015, as predicted by Hollwood.

And I'm hoping the Cubs lose to the Mets.  Just for the Schadenfreude...and so I can spend the year saying "Just  like 1969..." to my Cubs fan friends....

And here I thought this thread was about the ending of the Michigan State/University of Michigan football game.

I thought the same thing. That was quite an ending.

Better than TCU KSU last week,  and that was a helluva game.

Sorry about your luck, fisty.  Don't know the first thing about baseball to give you anything but condolences  :P

I always prefer that the Cardinals play badly, so the season is shorter, and I don't have to hear as much hype. But this year, they won't shut up about it. Maybe I should try to enjoy the schadenfreude.

Or did you mean about 2004?

Edited to elegantize language.

For shame.

In the words of Bill Murray, "The Mets are worse than cancer."  (Uttered during Harry Carey's post-stroke convalescence.)

And the worst Met ever was Rusty Staub, who could pinch-hit against any Cub pitcher like he was a silly girl tossing softballs.  Between the hammer of Rusty Staub on the Mets and the anvil of Steve Garvey on the Padres, my childhood baseball fandom was forged into a sharp instrument of fatalism.

Yin'z are lucky you have baseball to drool and tremble over.  We have only the Detroit Liedowns who might as well try playing baseball...they can't play football.

My two favorite teams are the White Sox and who ever is playing the Cubs.*   :P :P

I just want to see a whole lot of smug wiped off people's faces around here who have been touting the the Back to the Future "prediction" along with being able to collect over $100 in bets that the Cubs would NOT win the World Series.

To have them lose to the Mets (of 1969 fame) might send a great deal of trendy/ hipster/ smug/ non-baseball watching drunks over the ledges of buildings on the Northside.  Which would would be a good thing in and of itself.
