The free trial software that won't go away
« on: October 16, 2015, 12:06:34 PM »
A year or two ago I downloaded a free version of AdAware, an anti-virus software application. It was a free trial for six months or maybe a year.

Anyway, as the expiration of the free trial approached, I got pop-ups on my computer reminding me that my subscription would be expiring in 4 weeks, then 3, then 2, then 1. Then it went to six days, five, four, three, etc. Then it went to hours and minutes.

Once it expired, I got reminders that it had expired. Then I got offers to renew. This went on for two weeks after expiration.

Apparently the developers put in a "he's not giving in" feature, because I now have AdAware for free again.

It works well, but the annoying thing about programs to block pop-up ads and other annoyances is that they have their own annoying pop-ups, even if you pay for them.

Okay, back to my other curmudgeonly activities.

There should be a program somewhere in your operating system that removes programs you no longer want. You can also use a maintenance software like C-Cleaner to uninstall it.

I know there is. I just get a kick out of these programs that warn you they're going to expire, then renew themselves when you don't do it.

I can make it go away.

The inability to reliably and completely remove software is probably the thing I hate most about all versions of Windows from Win95 onwards. Playing around with freeware and shareware was FUN under MS-DOS. Load it up, try it out, if you don't like it -- DELETE.

It ain't that simple under Windoze.

Go with the free one.

I'm thinking I tried that awhile ago and found it was basically nothing but a front end to the built-in Windows uninstall utility.

I've had some good experience with Geek Uninstaller.  I haven't needed it often but when I have its worked well on difficult programs.

I'm thinking I tried that awhile ago and found it was basically nothing but a front end to the built-in Windows uninstall utility.

It starts out by firing up the built in utility, then goes through and removes every trace of the offending program. It deletes any left over files and registry entries that the uninstaller leaves behind. I've used it to get rid of quite a few nasties over the years.

Sounds like you need to try the command
