Stuff like Valium used to trip my dad right out. I'm talking full blown hallucination, the works! He was real sensitive to any of that stuff!
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

Also, another vote for doxylamine succinate, as Gigabuist mentioned. Like Benadryl/diphenhyrdamine, it's an old first-generation antihistamine but works better for me than diphenhydramine for helping me get drowsy. The doxylamine is used in some Benadryl and Unisom sleep aids instead of diphenhydramine, you just need to check the label for which it is.

I think the Unisom Sleep Tabs have doxylamine, and the regular Unisom and Benadryl sleep aids have diphenhydramine. The generic Sleep Aid pills at Costco use doxylamine.

It's worth the few minutes to watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS9cFb940-0

Ambien is out of the question.

You'll note on that video the guy mentions the weird stuff happens if he doesn't go right to bed when he takes it. Not going right to bed is likely the largest factor in the weird episodes people have. I've never waited more than 5 minutes to go to bed after taking a hypnotic, and I've never had a problem. Though on the other hand my dad also didn't stay up after taking it and still ended up washing all his pills, so it just varies.

But yeah as you live alone and haven't ever taken it before, going with one of the OTC options is the best idea. I've found the doxylamine actually works better for me as far as keeping me asleep than the prescription hypnotics. Main downside for me is the doxylamine gives me a bit of a "hangover" for a couple hours after I wake up.

As I can't afford that during the work week, I use Sonata most often if I take anything. It wears off much more quickly than Ambien, which can lead to having trouble staying asleep later in the night, but it also gives me no hangover. I don't know if it has the same blackout-and-do-weird-stuff risk as Ambien or not. But if I know I'll have time to sleep-in or otherwise deal with a bit of post-wakeup sleepiness, I go with the doxylamine.

I find Xanan better than Ambien. I feel drowsy every time I use Ambien.

I've known someone who deliberately abused ambien. As others have pointed  out, a lot of the weird effects seem to happen to people who don't use it properly. Surprise surprise.

Many years ago we used all sorts of drugs improperly just for entertainment.

Do you have a friend/acquaintance who will let you bunk out on their couch for a night or two?  Not only see if Ambien gives you the weirds  but see how well it lets you sleep in the comfort of an airline seat.

Does Korean Air fly to where you are going?  Their first class staterooms might be worth the cost.  https://www.koreanair.com/global/en/traveling/classes-of-service.html#cta-large=/global/en/traveling/classes-of-service/first-class/kosmo-sleeper.html

stay safe.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

My wife's been on Ambien for years.

Stage 1. She'd fall asleep so hard, so fast, she'd fall asleep sitting up in bed sometimes.

Stage 2. She'd get a box of cereal and eat out of it. Scold the elves and gnomes skittering around our bedroom. Lots of "Ambien sex".  And she went on eBay and bought a bunch of dresses from China that were 10 sizes too small. But she actually realized what she was doing and cancelled the purchase.. (Signs of stage 3 coming up...)

Stage 3. She's so tolerant of it now, I'm pretty sure she can drive cross country on it, and do our taxes. Not that I'd let her.
I promise not to duck.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I know a woman who gets that way on hydrocodone...almost disturbingly small doses at that.  The (usually) fun part is that, in that condition, she can neither lie nor shut up.  I learned way too much about what it's like to get a Brazilian wax, be pregnant, and give birth, (this got not only details, but compare and contrast between the births of her children) as well as pretty much every secret she had, no matter how boring or closely kept.  Real vs. delusion was pretty easy to determine by consistency and level of detail, since the delusions were neither particularly well fleshed out, (i.e. they were generally not multisensory at all - just a sound with no visual or vice versa) nor consistent from minute to minute.  Once we figured that part out, she stopped freaking out about them.

Maybe I should tell Eric to hint to my mother to switch to Ambian. It sounds like it makes people happy high.

I don't know what she's on (and part of the problem is she sits at the computer till it really kicks in, rather than going to bed) but she is just a flat out nasty bitch once it starts kicking in. Just really, really mean.
