I guess someone's feelings were hurt, so they had to call their mommy campus police.

Campus policing in the Orwellian Age:

Quote
Officer: “Do you have permission to wear it?”

Parten: “I don’t need permission to wear it.”

Officer: “You need permission from the university.”

Parten: “To wear a holster?”

Officer: “There’s a no-weapons policy, period.”

Parten: “That’s not a weapon.”

Officer: “I understand that.”

Summary:

You're not allowed to have weapons. A holster is not a weapon [acknowledged]. But ... some fragile flower got their feelz hurt and their knickers in a twist seeing a NON-weapon, so we'll just charge you with a weapons violation anyway because we don't have a rule prohibiting non-weapons.

I loved the part at the end, when the cops who busted the kid for a non-offense involving a non-weapon told them they should show more respect for the Keystone campus cops. "Respekt mah awthawritay!"

Here's a hint for Officer Clueless: respect is earned, and it's a two-way street. Don't expect to be respected when you bust someone who you acknowledge is NOT carrying a weapon on a weapons charge.

I would imagine that not having any weapon at all (The mentioned knife was in his friends pocket) would be an affirmative defense to a weapons policy citation, but I've been wrong before.

I commend the protester's keeping of the cool. The worst it got on their part was his friends snarky "Would you like a free copy of the US Constitution" (which made me laugh). In the video they come off as calm and reasonable, and the security comes off as aggressive and bullying.  So good protest.

I am looking at having to go back and take a couple courses on my local campus to finish my degree, and I see all these videos of campus life these days and wonder if I can get through 4 classes on campus without being expelled.  I'm not as tolerant of aggressive, cock-sure stupidity as I was in my 20's.

ETA:  ^ That's why it's important to come off as the reasonable one when protesting.  This was a win for his group.  Had he started cussing, and yelling about "Muh Rights!" on camera, the school very well may have doubled down on their officer.

I started college in my early/mid 30s after serving in the Navy and living as a married civilian for a little. Let's just say my attitude VS. the other student's differed a good bit. I wasn't a bit afraid to have "reasoned discourse" with the professor. Some, my sociology proff in particular, welcomed it, others, not so much.

Meh.  Officer un-Friendly did the kid a net favor.  There was no real harm, it was a "school citation" so not criminal, and it was rescinded quickly.  The kid had to stand and talk to people at a spot he was planning on standing and talking to people anyway, and he got great PR for his group, while making the people enforcing the law he doesn't like look stupid and bullying.

The officer lost half a paycheck of a job that I bet doesn't leave him a whole lot of excess cash in the first place and gets the added fun of being The Guy That Made His Bosses Look Bad. That always leads to some added fun.

Fair trade IMO

What the hell was the old pissy officer's issue? He just came off as a total jerk (not the one doing the citations, but the one rampaging on the pocket knife) I hope he got into trouble as well.

I'm guessing Deputy Dawg used that same citation class as a catch-all for anything he didn't like, presuming students were too dumb and/or intimidated to officially challenge it. Maybe this is a win for their campus as a whole, exposing an attitude that shouldn't be associated with badge.

Heh, heh --

I went back to school after I came home from Vietnam. There were several Vietnam veterans in my class, including a couple of US Marine Corps captains with purple hearts.

We had some interesting "discourses" with a few of the professors. They really didn't know what to do with/about us.

Officer suspended and student received apology

http://local15tv.com/news/local/usa-officer-suspended-without-pay-after-citing-student-with-empty-gun-holster
The officer KNEW there was no weapon, and still cited the student . . .

First thing I thought was "There should be consequences for knowingly filing a false report."

It appears that there are . . . light ones, but hitting the campus cop in the wallet makes  me  =D
