Swedish General Elections 2018 - any interest?
« on: September 09, 2018, 01:42:09 PM »
So, we held our general election here today. Polling places are open for another 20 minutes or so, closing at 8 PM local time. The absolutely biggest issue right now is immigration. Plenty of people quite accurately feel that the previous administrations have done nothing to improve the situation, thus ensuring that the Sweden Democrats may very well become the biggest or second biggest party. Rest assured that the reactions to this would equal those seen among Democrats after Trump was announced as having won your latest election.

Yes, I'm very interested. It could very well fuel a wave of change on immigration policy down into some of the other EU countries.

Some of my previous humble scriblings regarding Swedish politics:

Not quite political, but this little incident sure helped sway the opinion a bit:

Polling places are now closed. Wish us luck, guys.

Predictions: Moderates and Sweden Democrats will have about the same number of votes. Social Democrats will see a significant drop. Green Party hopefully falls below 4% and have to leave the Riksdag. Left Party increasing, Christian Democrats staying about the same, Liberal Party & Centre Party get maybe 6-7% each. With a bit of luck, Feminist Initiative will get about 3.5% of the votes, which are then worthless along with those for the hopefully-kicked-out-of-Riksdag Green Party.

Edit: the Green Party is getting 4.2% in opinion polls. Let's hope here.

I'll be meeting a guy I haven't seen in 24 years in a few weeks.  He's Norwegian but lives in Sweden now.  Be interesting to get his take.  I think he's more in line with DeSelby's politics.

Digging through some of Viking's links above, I found:

Germany, not Sweden.  Yet:

Packs Of Germans Conduct Revenge Attacks After NYE Sex Assaults

These/our governments better remember that our ancestors gave up vigilantism, blood feud, etc. because gov't said it would mete out justice.  If they betray their end of the bargain, the bargain is busted.

An interesting point.  Not that I go along with it, but certainly interesting.

604 districts out of 6004 counted, and the results are as follows, in descending order:
S: 29.0
SD: 19,6
M: 17
C: 9.6
V: 8.1
KD: 6.6
L: 4.6
MP: 3.9 ( =D )

About 3/4 of all votes are counted. It's very even between the two blocks - less than 0.5%. The centre-right Alliance had 40.2%, the red/greens had 40.6 when I last looked. And SD have 17.7% currently, making them the third biggest party, and a significant increase since the last election when they got around 13%. Still 25% of the votes left to count, so I am hoping for some improved numbers for SD.
And, tragically, right now it appears that the Green Party will still make it to the Riksdag with 4.4% of the votes. I had such high hopes.

I've been following along with the WSJ (and other sources), I'm very interested to see how this shakes out.

I thought the SD would grab 40-50% of the vote.

I had actually expected 25% or so.
As it stands now, there are only 50K votes left to count from Swedes voting from abroad. Currently, the left gets 144 seats in parliament, the right gets 143, SD gets 62. It'll be difficult for SD to support either bloc, because atleast one party in each bloc would leave, possibly for the other.

OK, so just what does that mean for Sweden's political direction?
Swing right or left or stuck with gridlock?

Depends. If the Alliance sticks together and the red/greens don't, then an Alliance minority government. If the red/greens stick together, then a red/green minority government. SD will get problems from atleast one party in each bloc should they align themselves in either direction. I would rather see the Alliance quit throwing tantrums, stick together and extend a hand towards SD.
