Roofing - recall on the recall
« on: February 25, 2016, 10:56:04 AM »
My house is 18 years old.  About 8 years ago there was a recall on the shingles and I got a new roof for free (I am still finding roofing nails..  bastards).

Come to find out yesterday there is now a recall on the shingles they used on the replacement.  The issue with the original roof was obvious, every shingle in the neighborhood had curling corners.  I don't see any problems in my current roof.

What I don't like is the verbiage in the note left on my door "portion of the roof covered".  These were supposed to be 30 year shingles so I am not cool with eating any costs not even 10 years into the deal.  The note was from a roofing contractor so who knows what the whole story is.  I have a message in with the HOA and the developer to get better information.

Fun times.

I would make them foot the whole bill.

Probably going to try to stick you with the cost of labor.

Or they may be fishing.  They went and checked who got roofing permits at the times in question and are trying to scam you into a new roof.

"Sorry, they say your shingles aren't covered."
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Now that I think about it, I wonder about the fishing thing too.  Maybe they are hoping I wasn't the home owner 8 years ago and they can get me for a new roof.

That is kind of sad.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

A notice left on your door by some local roofing contractor rather than a letter from the shingle manufacturer?

Sounds more like a scam than a legitimate recall notice.

Last year I got a new roof on my home - as did virtually everyone in the neighborhood - due to storm damage. A great MANY roofers were (and still are) calling me, ringing my doorbell, etc., offering "free inspections" and telling me they "work with insurance companies" to repair storm damage all the time.

The best laugh I had was the "local" roofer who was driving a pickup with out-of-state plates.

Point being - beware of scams.

If your new shingles were from some major manufacturer like GAF or Corning, you should have warranty paperwork from them; I suggest you contact them directly and find out what the story is.

Good luck.
