Gmail April Fools Backfire
« on: April 01, 2016, 02:51:45 PM »
http://www.businessinsider.com/google-pulls-mic-drop-minions-april-fools-joke-due-to-complaints-job-losses-2016-4

Google put in a new button, between reply and send+archive, 'Mic Drop' which inserts a comical picture of a cartoon animation character (Despicable Me Minion) doing the aforementioned act.

Pulled very quickly as from accidental use it caused some very inappropriate occurrences. Imagine the image starting a job application or a condolence letter from a funeral home.

Makes me quite glad to be using an email without the .gmail on the end for professional purposes.  Tho I still know some lawyers where it ends it .Aol

I think it is very inappropriate for any company that offers a service (even a free service) to take it upon themselves to muck around with said service with things like April Fools gags. Maybe they think it's funny, but not everyone enjoys April Fools Day.

Those folks should get a refund for what they paid!

Oh wait. It's free.

Admittedly, doing this for Google Apps for Businesses would be a bad idea.

From the news I understood that the additional problem was that using said button made it impossible to view any replies from the email thread.

That's the biggest problem, far beyond any incidental insensitivity.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I have a couple of free e-mail accounts (but not Gmail) for personal stuff. There's a reason why I use a paid account for my business e-mail.

Nothing says professional like an e-mail address that says "I can't afford to pay for e-mail."

I am all about owning domains and having professionally hosted email services (though I use Google Apps for most of that) but I consider @gmail.com addresses to be more professional than, say, @comcast.net or @localtelcoaccount.net.

So what does an AOL email address say about a person?

Yeah, but do you use a unique email address for every service you sign up for so you can track who is selling or losing control of their email lists?

You bet I do! (annoying potential spammer)@herohog.com goes straight to my "catch-all" bin. If they get SPAMMY, I blacklist them. Actually, ANY email address not defined goes in there so you can send email to *expletive deleted*bag@herohog.com and i'll get it.

I always do love the looks I get when I tell a sales drone that my email address is spam@revdisk.org or any of my other domains.

They like it even more when you tell them it is theircompanyname@yourdomain.com.

Nah, just figure out their CEO's personal email address.

I used to have a lot of fun giving each Radio Shack the phone number of a different RS store when they asked at checkout.  You'd think the computer would catch that.
