This is interesting: a consensus statement from the American College of Physicians recommending cognitive behavioral therapy as first line treatment for insomnia.  My wife, who uses Ambien every night for insomnia, will not like this recommendation.

I tried Lunesta and Ambien. Lunesta left me feeling like i had a mouth full of rotten cotton balls and Ambien, while it worked with no real deleterious after effects, I would sometimes discover that I had been up and about when I thought I had been sleeping all day. That, and I kind of got to liking it. I started using melatonin and I've actually been sleeping better with that than any prescription stuff.

The company my wife is with now has a sleep strip that contains melatonin.  The stuff is magic.

for those times when I just can't shut down and get to sleep, I take 7.5, or 15 MG of Restoril.   Works like a charm, every time.  I wake up in the morning, rested, and ready to go.

I get up, drink some water, and do some stuff for a little while.  I don't have much trouble sleeping though.  Only time I can't get to sleep is when I let myself get dehydrated a little.

Stopped working for me as well when I hit about 37.  Now if I drink more than one drink, i sleep like *expletive deleted*it.  And one drink isn't enough to help me go to sleep.
