I tried Lunesta and Ambien. Lunesta left me feeling like i had a mouth full of rotten cotton balls and Ambien, while it worked with no real deleterious after effects, I would sometimes discover that I had been up and about when I thought I had been sleeping all day. That, and I kind of got to liking it. I started using melatonin and I've actually been sleeping better with that than any prescription stuff.
Try CBT for your insomnia before pills
