I needed a new parking lot. The old asphalt was breaking up in places and a heavy semi drove over it on a 100 degree day and further damaged it. It was supposed to be done 2 years ago- didn't happen. Different contractor was supposed to do it last year but didn't show up until yesterday. Wasn't supposed to rain but we got almost 2" yesterday. Today they are digging out waterlogged clay for the rock base. Base is not included in the bid since they never know what they get into. After 6 dual tandem loads of rock were delivered they dropped a machine in a sink hole- previously unknown old dug well or something deep. Now they brought in another semi load of rock. The off bid work is adding up... And up.
Tonight I'm having gin.

Ouch! Better make it a double! How many sq ft on the lot?

I don't remember but it was a 15k bid before the fun started. My ouija board says 20k now. They are hoping the rock stabilizes the sink without having to bring in special flow able fill.$$

How about using all that milled asphalt to fill the hole instead of paying to haul it off and paying to haul in new stone.

I watched a sinkhole open up and swallow a big trackhoe. Thank god it was a good operator, he clawed his way back out of the hole with the machine.
Thought some said they ended up dumping 100+ truckloads of cement into it to fill it.

Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Without burning off all the oils that would probably be considered pollution rather than fill.

small business.
They dumped more water and more rock into the hole after I left last night but the area is now stable. It would be too easy to use the grindings for fill. All that had to be trucked out and lots of rock trucked in. There is some reason why they have to do it that way. Still don't know what the original ancient hole was, old well, mine shaft, or subterranean alien base. There was evidence of old brick with about 3-4 feet of dirt between it and the asphalt on the surface.
