Introduced my two oldest grandkids to shooting today!
« on: June 29, 2016, 07:56:59 PM »
They took to it very well. Don't fully have the strength yet to do it by themselves. I was going to teach them but daddy stepped up and I stepped aside. It's his job and I'm glad he did it. Made me proud. Didn't expect him to do it either.

The oldest is a girl. She wants to shoot some birds. Didn't expect that either. She's not ready yet anyways. Did manage to hit some cans at 5 and 10 yards. They did pretty well for the first time out.

The gun is a Springfield Savage Model 15. My father in law gave it to me and told me if I could fix it I could have it. Had a broken firing pin. Fixed it and taught my kids to shoot with it. Cool thing is that's the same gun my father in law taught my wife to shoot with when she was about 10-12 years old. So that makes three generations that has learned on that gun. Pretty damn cool if you ask me!

Do they now qualify as right-wing, gun-nut, murdering, terrorists?

Congratulations on introducing 2 new future gun nuts.

Job well done.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

We started our grandkids with BB guns off the front porch.  Once they got muzzle and trigger control ingrained, we graduated to 22s.  Now we take all nine of them to The Whittington Center every Memorial weekend for a shooting outing.  The two oldest are now 16 and enjoy trap and five stand.  My own three kids grew up wearing earmuffs and watching us shoot handgun silhouette.  They had safety habits ingrained before they ever picked up a gun.  I gave my son a Chipmunk for his 7th birthday, took him to the range and plunked down a bunch of ammo and let him have at it.  He shot until he had blisters on his thumbs from cocking the little rifle.  He's now 39 and a way better shot than I ever was.

Taking the 8 year old shooting for the first time this weekend.  Scoped bolt action .22 with a suppressor at cans at maybe 15 feet off a rest.  Going for the least intimidating shooting experience possible.

At the house right now I have a Stevens Crack Shot 26, in .22 rimfire.  This is a kid's single shot, from a century ago.  (Not mine to keep, alas.  I'm evaluating some guns for someone at work, who inherited her father's guns.)  Simple rolling block action.   This thing is a hoot to shoot.  I ran through most of my one box of .22 CB caps the other weekend.
