A friend who worked as an electrician on the railroad for many years told me that it was common for locomotives to have cooler chests that were chilled with compressed air. They apparently wouldn't get to freezing temperatures, but they did a good job at keeping lunches and drinks and the like cool. And there was always a surplus of compressed air, or the power available to provide it, on a locomotive.

There's a local company that makes precision refrigerators (like for laboratories) that are solid-state thermoelectric. I don't think it's very electrically efficient, but it would be nice to have a silent fridge that doesn't kick on and off.
