If you start lifting free weights try and find someone to teach you proper form. Working out correctly will give you better results and keep you from hurting your joints. I hurt a shoulder being stupid and not using proper form when lifting heavy. After hurting it I had no choice but to use proper form because the joint is now damaged.

Which is why I mentioned in my last post I'm going to start out slow and easy, and not with lots of weights. I'm only 18, I don't want stuff to start hurting anytime soon. Wink

It may sound stupid but even the big boys practice with just the bar so no, heavy weight is not your goal, good form is, on ALL your exercises not just with freeweights.

I didn't say HEAVY supersets just arrange your workout in that order, that's all. It's very effective.

Incidentally, several squirrels were spotted but remained unharmed as of todays foray, I think the squirrely warning system was working against me today. My feet are killing me so I figure I must have got some walking in. Who was it that asaid all that about walking with your gun?  grin

That was Thomas Jefferson.

I find few things match the old-school methods.  Get in the habit of taking a bicycle instead of a car, for one thing.  I swapped over to a bike this summer and I've seen an enormous change in my health and strength.  I just got back from a run to three stores on the bike, about ten miles round trip across town.  I left at two PM and got back at four PM, with a backpack and bike loaded with food.  I've done that same three store trip (gun store, health food store, Freddies) many times in the car, and it also takes me about two hours.  The bike allows me to cut across major detours, avoid the snagled areas and I can ride right to the front door.  Plus when I get back I can have a pot pie without looking quite so much like a pot pie.

Hiking is also fantastic, as is skiing.  For muscle builing I'd suggest building core muscles instead of trying to get big (and totally useless) biceps.  Hatha yoga plus some core muscle weight training is a good balance.

I've thought of trying skiing this winter, only problem is we don't have any snow right now. Geez, this is Wisconsin, you'd think we'd have some snow.
