I found an unknwn (to me) ally
« on: October 23, 2016, 10:05:56 PM »
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/10/23/internet-is-becoming-unreadable-because-of-a-trend-towards-light/

An expert agrees with me that thin, greyed out or pastel fonts aren't legible (in some cases aren't even visible) on screen. Now if we could just get web designers to pay attention ...

No expert here, but I agree with you and I've commented about that recently and in the past.

Worst site I ever saw in that respect had a dark tan background and lighter tan font.  Worse than just that, the font itself was some western-cowboy style.  I did want to read something on it and after a few lines I took an aspirin and I copied and pasted the text to notepad.

Ahhh.

People seem to forget that the purpose is to communicate, and putting things in the way of that goal, like weird fonts and such are counterproductive.

Oh, wait, wait.  Now I remember the very worst site had a purple ground and red font.  Sorry for the memory lapse, but I think the impact of that shorted out some neurons for a while.

I simply don't see the problem.

I will sometimes highlight the text using the mouse and that takes care of the issue for me.

Some browsers have a "reader view" setting, that strips away the bells and whistles, and often makes the text more readable, as well. Firefox has it, and I think Safari does, too. I believe one of the newer Microsoft browsers may have that.

There's also an add-in for Firefox that will disable the style elements of a page.

If nothing else, hit CTRL and the plus sign to embiggen the text.

Also, things like this make the internet a lot less readable.  ;/

I know a little as my SIL is profoundly deaf...I believe a few other members know it as well.
