No expert here, but I agree with you and I've commented about that recently and in the past.
Worst site I ever saw in that respect had a dark tan background and lighter tan font. Worse than just that, the font itself was some western-cowboy style. I did want to read something on it and after a few lines I took an aspirin and I copied and pasted the text to notepad.
Ahhh.
People seem to forget that the purpose is to communicate, and putting things in the way of that goal, like weird fonts and such are counterproductive.
Oh, wait, wait. Now I remember the very worst site had a purple ground and red font. Sorry for the memory lapse, but I think the impact of that shorted out some neurons for a while.
