deer season ending early for me this year
« on: November 06, 2016, 04:18:44 PM »
Well, knowing my trashed out knee was going to limit me and being scheduled to have a total knee joint replacement dec 2, my wife almost begged me not to hunt at all.
Me being stubborn (she says martyr too) I put up 2 tree stands in sept. I hunted 3 times. Arrowed a big lone doe with no yearlings 3 nights ago. Luckily I could get within about 40 yards of it with the atv. Just got done cleaning up. Sine I have a 1/2 beef coming next month I didn't do a lot of cuts and roasts but I have 15 pounds of breakfast sausage in the freezer, 15 pounds of summer sausage to smoke tomorrow and 5 pounds of jerky slice in the smoker now. my wife is now no longer begging but demanding I quit the season even though I have 1 more archery and 2 firearm tags.
Might have to shoot one from the porch next.

Be careful to distinguish between "recreation" and "de-creation."

I've been banged up enough over 77 years that since I was about 60 I started to examine that concept before doing any derring-do.

Yeah, I know, it sounds like I turned kinda wimpish, but I think about that nowadays.

I'm sure others can chime in here with lists of various broken, worn, or missing parts over their own life experiences, so I won't catalog my own.

The knee is bad enough that I can do things that make it hurt worse, but I can't make the joint any worse.
I am either determined or stubborn enough to want to hunt. The fallout is I'm awake at all hours with my knee but that sorta helps with monitoring the smoker.

Knees and hips are bad, so I gave up tree stands and climbers some years back.  I am not mobile enough to enjoy still hunting any more either.  What I can do well, is to sit in a ground blind, and ambush 'em.   :)

Reminds me of the old one about "How do yo hunt deer with a Mosin-Nagant?"

"You stick an apple on the bayonet and wait for them to come and eat the apple."

(Not recommended.  Illegal.  "Baiting game."  And evil, to boot.)

It depends on your state, whether baiting is legal.

Besides, I'm pretty sure that you still have to make long shot if the apple is at the end of the bayonet.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Yeah, but no sense complicating things for the sake of just a joke.

True, true, laughed like hell.  I understand that bayonet length was a holdover from when they fought cavalry with pikes.

But you could hide pretty far back in the brush and still have the apple hanging out in the open.
