Where to buy a refurbished laptop?
« on: December 25, 2006, 06:27:11 PM »
I am in the market to purchase a reconditioned WinXP laptop that will primarily be used by the kids for their school work and web surfing. Thus, I don't need a particularly high-powered model. I have purchased a refurbished HP laptop from eCost a few years ago and have been happy with it. Can anyone recommend some current well-regarded places to buy a reconditioned laptop? I don't plan on going the eBay route.

Yeah, take a look at TigerDirect.com

They've got a great refurb / overrun / sale area.

I don't know what you are looking to spend, but Dell's entry level is $500.00.

I speak very highly of mine.

Does what I need it to do.

As part of my small business, I've bought a few laptops, and many, many dual or quad-cpu workstations and servers from:

http://www.pcsurplusonline.com

I've also done good business with:

http://www.nwpcmall.com

(Just bought a pair of IBM dual-Xeon M-series Intellistations there for $270.00 each)

They show several laptops here:

Well, after checking various sites, I bought a new HP DV 1530 notebook (1.7 Centrino M, 1024 MB RAM, 100 GB HD, Lightscribe DVD/CD RW, 801.11 b/g wireless, 14" LCD and Win XP Home) for $ 699.  This was from eCost in California.  Some of the other laptops with similar specs were $ 50-200 more expensive for a refurb unit, so I decided that this price for a new model was pretty good.  It is better than my existing home HP laptop, so I am now pondering giving that to the kids and taking the new one for myself!

Since you can buy a brand new name brand laptop for $500 these days, I am not inclined much toward a used or refurbished unit.

Keep in mind that the new Vista OS will probably obsolete 75% of existing laptops so there might be quite a few used ones coming on the market soon.
