I noticed that the Marine without his cover didn't salute. My military protocol is more than a little rusty -- is it verbotten to salute when hatless outdoors? I suppose that's technically out of uniform, right? And enlisted men don't salute superior officers when out of uniform?

I feel bad for the Marine. Not only did he just have to stand there like a statue while his hat blew off, then he had to have it happen again after the President replaced it and patted him on the shoulder. Here's the President trying to be nice and help you out, mother nature is being a bitch about it and all you can do is stand there.  I would have been so embarrassed.

And yes, kudo's to Trump for picking up the hat in the first place.

If I were a Marine (I wasn't -- I was Army), I couldn't pull that duty. My forehead just isn't shaped right for those hats ("cover," in military speak) to stay on my head. I always had problems with that when wearing Class As. (Gives an entirely different meaning to the expression "My cover was blown.")

Lotta rules go out the window when you fly Marine One. Look at the pilot and crew uniforms. Most impressive part of those young Marines in Alphas is that you see the salute on TV but you don't see that every minute the president is not with that help those guys are in a different uniform wiping, polishing and inspecting. Probably not fixing, those birds are worked hard between each flight. Like seriously, ever seen any other H-3 not leak? I used to joke that HMX-1 had a crew of sergeants somewhere in a supply depot going over every part. Whatever got thrown in the trash was then mailed to my unit. The whole operation is amazing. One time I was on Quantico and thought as an old H-3 guy I would drive by and try to sweet talk my way into a look. Yeah, right. I applaud anyone with the balls to so much as slow down or even look overlong at that complex.

And that was classy. Previous residents have openly despised the Marines that serve them.
