Confusion: AARP = ANTI gun ownership?
« on: January 06, 2007, 07:23:33 PM »
I'm not there yet, but headed toward my AARP card and was not aware that this powerful lobbying group is decidedly, unhappily anti-gun.

There are a number of advantages to being a member, but I don't need financial advantages from an organization that is trying to take my gun rights away from me.

How many of you older guys have found an acceptable solution to this?

Thanks,
Fig

I made the golden 5-0 this past October, and have been getting junk mail from them every week since.
Unless there is an acceptable solution, the shredder will continue getting a workout.

I started getting AARP junk mail over five years ago.

But I've been paying attention to the group much longer.

AARP actively lobbies for anti-gun causes.

How much in the way of "discounts" is that worth?

What other memberships do you own?  If you look around if you are a NRA member you will get the same discount at most of the same locations.  AAA membership also will give you the same type of discounts.  Please don't send any money to the left wing, commie organization.

I found a solution to this problem a long, long time ago: I don't do business with anti-Second Amendment bigots. I don't do business with racists. I don't do business with enterprises that support whacko leftist extremist causes, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

If that means I occasionally pass up a discount, so what? Nobody ever said the right thing to do is always the easiest.

I'm 54 and never joined AARP either, for the same reason others have posted.

I get enough of a discount with my retired military ID or my CDL on the few occasions when we stay in a motel.  I get a really good deal on my auto insurance via USAA, and do most of my groc shopping at a commissary.

I don't need 'em, and don't want my $ lining the pockets of a bunch of left wing grifters with a spendid marketing ploy.

No thanks!

Polls have shown that the actual memembership of AARP is not anti-gun.  The people who run the business of AARP are personally anti-gun, and use their positions to lobby as anti-gun.  Since they function okay for the business side of AARP there is little that can be done.

A problem is that there's no voting by AARP members which could change the makeup of the "bosses".  As long as us Old Pharts get the cheap insurance and the discounts and other bennies, as a group we're all happified.

Between USAA, NRA, and AAA memberships, I've got the discounts covered pretty nicely.

I had just never paid any attention to the AARP until my impending oldness began to get closer.  Reading their info on the website, it's unquestionable that they strike a gun-grabber stance.

Doesn't/don't any US military vets and educated old folks harrass the sh!t out of them for this?  it would seem that an organized protest, petition, or letter-writing campaign might serve to get them AT LEAST to strike a "no opinion" stance on 2nd Amendment rights, rather than being an enemy.

Just thinking out loud...
