Financial assistance for hearing aids
« on: November 08, 2017, 12:56:27 PM »
One of my custodial crew is, for lack of a better description, deaf as a stump. If surroundings are dead quiet and he's looking straight at you he can make out most of what you say. Otherwise he most likely won't even acknowledge you said anything.

Our insurance has some hearing aid coverage but I'm trying to educate myself on other options. He's a vet (Army) so there's a possibility. Texas Workforce Commission also has assistance depending on financial status. Any other options out there he might explore?

As a vet, does he have VA benefits?  If he's been rated at all by the VA for disability that might be a start.

As an adult, I have never had insurance coverage for hearing aids, and so I spend several thousand dollars out of pocket every 3-5 years.   Costco has the best prices on hearing aids.  There are likely Texas social service agencies or deaf advocacy groups (Google it) that may be able to refer or assist with the cost.  I would call the audiology training program of local universities to see if they have any referral sources or offer low-cost aids.  The Hearing Aid project or Hearing Charities of America are also good sources for people who cannot afford them.

There are "sound amplifiers" and such that you can buy online for drastically cheaper than US "hearing aids" that can be programmed by your cell-phone.

Check the local VA, I believe all vets are now eligible for hearing aids whether service connected or not. As a bonus they have the high end stuff for the most part.

Pretty much all hearing loss is service-connected for vets if they had any combat time. We didn't wear ear plugs in fire fights in Vietnam. I'm only rated at 10 percent hearing loss, but they gave me hearing aids.
