We've had a few killed since 31 Dec out here in CO.  I have a hard time reading and hearing about it, let alone writing about it.

Sample:

https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/10-colorado-officers-shot-3-killed-in-the-line-of-duty-over-past-5-weeks

I'm sick about this.  I don't know what the hell's going on, unless they're put-up jobs by antis/leftists/antifas/hyperlibs.  Paranoia notwithstanding, that's something that should occur to anyone with half a brain.

This is really close to me.  Like 14 miles.  Got friends who live there.  Good neighborhoods.  No where I would call bad.  One officer was a K9 officer.  Dog was in the car.  Sad.  They says domestic calls are the worst...

Don't buy the hype. The numbers don't add up.  There is not some epidemic of officer deaths going on in the country.
The 24 hour news cycle makes it look worse. *expletive deleted*it, look at the 1930's, and figure that the police force was easily less than half the size it is now.

https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2017-12-28/dramatic-drop-in-police-officer-deaths-in-2017
Read the last article to fruition.  Not that it shouldn't count as a duty related death, but they add 9/11 related illness to the list.  *expletive deleted*it, 5 officers drown on duty.  They throw these numbers out there to make it seem like cops are being shot to death all the time.  But all officer duty related deaths are included in the number.

Statistically, the most dangerous place for any officer is a traffic stop.  Not because they might be shot, but because they might get run over.
Most  years, fewer than half of officers are shot and killed in the line of duty.

The NEOLF says there is over 900,000 sworn officers in the US.  http://blog.skepticallibertarian.com/2014/08/26/by-the-numbers-how-many-cops-are-there-in-the-usa/

Well considering there are approximately 900,000 sworn officers in the US, and they actively put themselves in harms way 24/7... yes I do.  Maybe someone with some math skills can put up the actual percentage of those that die on duty each year, but on average over the last 10 years fewer than 200 die on duty each year.
The narrative is that there is 1) an uptick in murders of officers, and 2) an epidemic of police duty deaths especially by shooting
This narrative is false.

Policing is a dangerous job.  It's ranked around 14th most dangerous if you break down the OSHA statistics.
But the police murder/shooting stats do not match the narrative.

, despite the seriousness of the discussion.

I was going to say something about that, but I've got in enough trouble correcting things around here already.

------------------------------------------------

Whether this is another case of "improved" reporting or not, a cop being killed is still a tragedy whether politics is involved or not, and frankly, I never paid that much attention to the actual statistics involved.  I'm not an insurance actuary.  I'm just a concerned citizen... and even more concerned now about all the "End of Watch" funerals lately here in Colorado.

Like three of them since Christmas.

How's that for a statistic?

Of course it's a tragedy.
But don't wear blinders to the facts.  Because the narrative that police are being wholesale slaughtered in the street is what is being pushed, and it will be used to take away even more rights and freedoms.  Mark my words.

Agreed. It's already happening. You could see it in play when the LEOSA was enacted. At the time, the ONLY aspect of the law being discussed was that police officers (and retirees) needed to be allowed to go armed everywhere they traveled because they might meet someone they had arrested years ago who still bears a grudge.

As of a couple of days ago, the narrative has suddenly shifted to the purpose of the LEOSA being so that off-duty cops (and retirees) could be better positioned to protect the populace. No, I'm sorry -- that was not the reason behind passing the law, and that was not the reason police officers were haunting all the "gun" discussion boards to advocate for passage of the law. It was all about how they are more at risk than the rest of us. It's not true, of course, but that was their story, and it sold the product. They got their LEOSA. But statistics don't seem to support the notion that more police are being killed in the line of duty than ever before. What's more likely is that the modern climate of Internet news reporting, coupled with social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc., means that each incident of an officer death gets much broader coverage, so more people from farther away are aware of each death.

OK, I yield.  It's more of a propaganda effort than an actual increase.
