Heddy Lamar and Radio
« on: March 10, 2018, 05:24:38 PM »
Am I the only one who didn't know this about Heddy Lamar? I thought it was pretty cool. She and another guy came up with the precursor to spread spectrum, but it couldn't be used because the tech at the time was too primitive.

It didn’t work out that way: The patent they received—No. 2292387—simply gathered dust in the U.S. Patent Office until it expired in 1959. But three years later, the U.S. military put their concept to use during the Cuban Missile Crisis. And ultimately, the two unlikely pioneers’ work on “frequency hopping” would be recognized as a precursor to the “spread-spectrum” wireless communications used in cellular phones, global positioning systems and Wi-Fi technology today.

Reading further into the article, after all her accomplishments in her first 30 years, she certainly had a sad turn of fortune in her later life.

After they were awarded their patent on August 11, 1942, they donated it to the U.S. Navy—a patriotic gesture to help win the war. But Navy researchers, believing that a piano-like mechanism would be too cumbersome to install in a torpedo, didn’t take their frequency-hopping concept very seriously. Instead, Lamarr was encouraged to support the war effort by helping to sell war bonds, and she did: Under an arrangement in which she would kiss anyone who purchased $25,000 worth of bonds, she sold $7 million worth in one night.

Hubba-hubba!

Basic 3 light studio head shot. The lighting for the shot was not the first thought.

Nor mine.  She's the cat's meow. Hubba hubba.

Ben, I did that so that ten years down the mis-information highway, nobody will try to debunk the theory that the actress named Hedy Lamarr invented anything, but it was really a guy named Heddy Lamar, and cite your post and the follow-up mis-spellings down that "mis-information" highway as evidence.

Jes' doin' my part.  Like when I grouse about loan and lend.

Well, I figured it was impossible for you to read an entire article filled with the correct spelling, then post a thread with an incorrect spelling in the title.

So it must have been deliberate, I figured.

I was just trying to stifle promulgation of the error unto the seventh generation of netizens is all.  No personal offense, I hope.

Then you would be incorrect.  =D
