It looks like it's end game for my sweet Ruger
« on: January 22, 2007, 09:49:49 AM »
I just made an emergency trip to the vet with Ruger. She was very lethargic and showing all of the signs of bleeding internally again.
The ultrasound shows a very large tumor in her liver. The vet is certain that it's an aggressive cancer.

They're stabilizing her right now, but I've got some decisions to make.

I'm just finding it really hard right now to separate what's right for her with what's right for me.

In December 2004 the vet was sure that she had liver cancer, but it was a non-cancerous spleen tumor. I don't see getting that lucky again.

With Nikky's problems lately, I never saw this one coming. I really thought that Ruger was good to go.

I can't believe I'm going too lose her.

So sorry for the tough times, Mike.

If it's his time, take comfort-- Ruger'll be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm with richyoung on this.

My 13 year old Alaskan Malamute died Nov 11th.  This was one I didn't have to euthanize.  Nevertheless, it's hard to lose them.

But it sounds like you may need to let this dog go.

After 7 weeks dogless I went and got me another mal.

I hope you get through this as easy as possible for Ruger and for you.

Best wishes,

matis

Loosing animals is harder than loosing people.

Mike-

Ruger put her trust in you to do what is right for you.  She has given you good, loyal years as a good, honest and protective friend.

Sorry to say, but it sounds like it's time to return the favor.

I've been there.

Sorry man.

I'm sure they really are one in the same.  Sounds like she has had a great life with a great "owner".  Hopefully the vet is wrong, but if not, I'm sure you'll keep her best interest in mind. My condolences.

Made that same hard decision in November for my 18 year-old dachshund-spaniel mix.  She had suffered a stroke, and was reduced to walking around in left-hand circles, and had no bladder or bowel control.  Tore me up, especially when the goodnight injection caused her to go into wild spasms in my arms before she shut down.

Until they build a dog that can live as long as humans, we'll always be saddled with that harsh reality.

For Missy and I, it boiled down to a quality of life question vs. my selfishness to keep her near me as she suffered.

My two big dogs are now 4 years old.  I will dread that day when it comes, but it will.

My heart's with you, Mike.  sad

sad  From the pictures I've seen she looked like a very intelligent, alert companion.
