That's exactly what a country 20 trillion dollars in debt needs,  is another failed state in the fold.

First, fixed that.

Second, who gets to decide if PR becomes a state?  Or gets cut loose as their own country?  I know which I would vote for.

Yup. They are only doing this because they totally screwed up the territory and now want a bailout and free nanny state stuff. If they were doing okay, I guarantee they'd be screaming for independence.

I don't think you want to cut them loose.  They're almost 100% pure socialist* (hence their monetary problems even before the hurricanes) and too close to our shores for that.  Don't need another one.

Leave them as an unincorporated U.S. Territory.

Maybe we can install a new territorial governor, ya think? >:D

Rep. José E. Serrano (D-N.Y.), who was born in Puerto Rico, said that if it is wasn’t clear that “Puerto Rico is in a colonial relationship with the United States, look at what happened after Hurricane Maria . . . they are an afterthought.”

Or it could have been that there was very weak infrastructure in 'Rico making it ripe to be wiped out by a disaster (like a hurricane) because everything was allowed to fall apart under demorcatic leadership, federal funds being stolen/squandered.

Puerto Rico needs to show some kind of fiscal responsibility before they become a state.

Are they still mad that we didn't airlift entire hospitals and supermarkets to Puerto Rico, through hurricane conditions, in a 24-hour time-frame?

I read an article yesterday that something of the reverse has happened. Apparently some 200-300 thousand Puerto Ricans have moved to Florida since the hurricane. It was suggested that they might sway Florida politics into the blue, since they vote based on government services.

What we need is several hundred thousand intrepid colonialists to move to Puerto Rico, rebuild it into a modern paradise of industrial and tourist capitalism, vote all the bums out, then apply for statehood.  >:D

I read an article a day or two ago that reported there are (or were) lines and lines and piles and piles of "stuff" that had been airlifted into PR and that were still sitting around the airport because the government of PR couldn't find any trucks or drivers to distribute the stuff. That's hardly surprising -- I'm sure they had more important things to do -- such as holding 24/7 press conferences complaining about the lack of support from the U.S.

Also, just like in Third World Countries, many supplies went to the "right/connected" people.

Even if they had trucks & drivers, they didn't have roads cleared to the interior.

That's what they make nukes for. We don't need Puerto Rico as a territory, or protectorate, or whatever they are now, and we certainly don't need them as a state. Cut 'em loose.

Puerto Rico needs to show some kind of fiscal responsibility before they become a state.

After they get statehood they can revert to being Illinois-in-the-Carribean.
