Pavlov's Buttons
« on: September 05, 2018, 08:45:14 AM »
I've often wondered if the crosswalk buttons actually do anything, or if it's just random chance that I've pressed them just before the light was going to change anyway.

They need to add the unsubscribe “button” to that list.

Walked the river front area of Omaha a couple of weeks ago. Cross walks everywhere but not a single button I could find.

Also a placebo button.

Yeah, my experience is that... some of them actually do things, while others appear to be for show.

Sometimes it's even intelligent: at 7:00 pm with no one on the road, pushing the button will immediately turn the lights red (ok, yellow, heading to red) and give you a walk symbol.

Same location, 8:00 am as everyone is heading into work, pushing the button will make you wait exactly as long as not pushing the button until the scheduled changes happen.

There is one at an intersection near my house that I walk through a lot.  If you hit the button, it will tack on about 20 seconds to the light change and give you the extra 20 seconds to walk across.  It also activates the crossing signals, noise makers, and count down.  Normally, the traffic isn't heavy enough for me to even hit the button when I go through.

There was a touch sensor crossing button on the street I used to live on, on the intersection with the main highway in town.
It actually worked- you touch the sensor, and the green light starts a countdown sequence.
I've also waited several minutes at the intersection with my motorcycle (bike wasn't tripping the road sensors), to the point that one time, I got off my bike, walked over to the side of the road and hit the crosswalk button, other times I just road through (left turn) the red light if it didn't trip in reasonable time.

Brimic? Here in WI, you don't have to wait for the light to change. Believe it's wait 1 minute, and go if clear

Similar laws here in Virginia.
