Stock design also has a LOT to do with it.

Many of these single shots, especially the older ones, had a lot of drop. More drop intensifies the felt recoil.

You have to wonder how many kids, after getting one as their first shotgun, quit hunting after their first outing.  =D

12ga MAGNUM Stevens single with a LONG barrel. A gift from the wife (pawn shop find). Stupid me, I bought Magnum shells to shoot her the first time. Fired a few and thought I had broken my dang shoulder!!! Fired the rest from the hip just to be rid of the evil things. Low brass loads HURT in that thing, I *expletive deleted*it you not. I always kept some high brass shells with me for when someone ELSE wanted to shoot it `cause I'm evil that way.

I went shooting with a bunch of coworkers one day, we all had carloads of guns and ammo... One of the guys was shooting some stoutly loaded slugs through an 870, hands it to me, and says "here give this a try, I'm having a hard time zeroing it."
I sandbag it on a bench, pull the trigger "BLAM!!!!!" My face and shoulder were stinging....
Me "What in the...?"
Coworker "Uh, I should have warned you, I cut an inch off the stock so it fits me better."

Yeah, I hate those videos where some poor gal or small person is handed a high-recoil gun and is knocked over or hit in the head by recoil and everybody laughs.

Idiots.

I guess as a redeeming feature, they can serve as warnings.  But they're always set up as ha-ha funny jokes.

Those guys are usually cousin-humping goobers who have no idea how to shoot the firearm and mitigate recoil themselves... or buy their girlfriends/wives .357 snubnoses because 'they are just her size' and have a pink grip.
