I was floored when I saw the map of Iwo and all the fortifications it showed. It's amazing any of them survived at all, let alone take the island. I'm in total awe.

I read the book about 4-5 yrs ago and I agree it is a very great read .(the movie was ok but nowhere as good as the book)
My father in-law was at the base of Mt Surabachi and saw the first flag being raised. He was one who never talked about the war.  After reading of the hell he saw on that island can see why he would want to put those memories as far out of his mind as possible.

I've read about Iwo Jima, though not the specific book mentioned.

Rough stuff.

Just saw the movie, and was very disappointed . . . it was sort of like parts of several different movies, each of which was done by a couple of different writers who didn't communicate, then randomly edited and spliced together.
