There's nothing inherently wrong with printing a list -- names and addresses -- of folks who carry firearms.  (I think it is tin-foil hattery, at the extreme, to believe it harmful.)

In a perfect world, every name is on the list, so who cares?

I've carried both my full-size 1911A1 and Officer's ACP Mexican-style on my strong-side hip, when things went "bump" in the night.  Unless I somehow get my body parts to squeeze (ala' Tentacle Hentai) the grip safety, enter the trigger guard, and switch off the frame safety all at the same time, I'm not too worried about an AD or ND in that mode.  I've also put my J-Frame S&W Model 36 in my pants or jacket pocket.  Glad to know I'm an accident waiting to happen.   rolleyes

Regarding the published list of CHL holders, I agree.  I don't want an open invite to ne'er-do-wells published in the local newspaper to come to my home looking to steal firearms.  Stupidity on the part of the editors and publishers.

As far as I know in most places they can't just FOID and print all the names and addresses of licensed drivers for particular safety and general "privacy reasons".  Heck, I can't even look up a person's info with their actual plate number to "prevent stalking" and such.

Why shouldn't gun carriers receive equal protection?  Especially if "theft of firearms" is such an issue with folks who dislike guns.  By printing the list they are actively enabling it (the theft) as a means to try to intimidate carriers into giving up their permits to regain some privacy and safety from those who would attempt to prey upon them.

MMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... tort....

Apparently they published the name and home address of the Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court.

OOPS!

I don't care what political beliefs ya have.  Somethings are so stupid, you really can't fathom how these folks remember to breath.   That isn't shooting yourself in the foot, it's grabbing a belt fed and going postal.

Question, in the article, doesn't he meantion that some folks got their CCW due to stalking?  Isn't publishing the address of a stalking victim when you clearly know the person is being stalked some violation of federal anti-stalking laws?  He flat out said "Bunch of people got CCW's because they were in fear for their life due to stalking, here's their home address."  Any hope in that department, El T?

Also, if any of you are tight with any VA gun organizations, have them send letters to Google and other search engines that retain data, asking them to purge it.  Should be a pretty clear cut issue, I don't imagine they want the bad press.

Has anyone notified the Chief Justice of the VA Supreme Court that his address was published?

Revdisk,

That's a damned good question, so I sent that off to the president of the VCDL to see if that avenue has been investigated.

The local paper publishing my name and address and noting that I keep portable valuables in the house.  Just what I need.  They could also post that I am single and work during the day.  Maybe I could update their website on when my weekly softball games are.
I guess I'll take off my tinfoil hat though.  No need for that.   rolleyes rolleyes

Scott,
I imagine you're aware of the rising furor over the Roanoke Times decision to publish a searchable database of all Virginia's CHP holders, along with the home address of each of us. The writer is now getting Zumboed, but good. Read all about it here: http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=261555

I hope you're intending to remedy this situation legislatively ( and that's from a guy who thinks most problems stem from too many laws, not too few). If not, then I would request that you do so. I believe that personal info of CHP holders should be for official use only. No good can possibly come from the misuse and publication of this information by these carpetbagging morons in Roanoke.

My best to you and your family, as always.
   Very respectfully
   Tom

I heard back from VCDL.

The individual who responded says that VCDL's attorneys unfortunately at this time don't see an avenue of pursuing any possible violations of stalking laws...

Rev, yes, should be grounds to prosecute him criminally for that statement as well as others.  Not licensed in Virginia but just a cursory glance at their criminal code reveals potential criminal violations.

There needs to be a hue and cry for a grand jury to investigate. police

Might want to pass that onto any VA lawyer critters.  All it'd take is one stalker hunting down a person who's records should have been sealed...  At least he was kind enough to fully admit he knew exactly what he was doing.
