It is official: early Daylight Saving Time saves no energy
« on: April 03, 2007, 06:59:32 AM »
As if the claimed 1% decrease in energy use during the old DST wasn't worthless enough, it is now official that our early DST this year saved nothing at all, but costed a lot due to computer patches for clocks.   Though I must say having more daylight to walk my dog in the evenings is nice.  But the problem is, the law that gave us early DST also says that it must change back if there are no energy savings.  So now we have to deal with the problem of computer patches AGAIN.

I wish the government would stay out of any any conservation business altogether.  The free market works well enough.  If not ideal, it sure is better than anything idiot bureaucracies can manage.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The early onset of Daylight Savings Time in the United States this year may have been for naught.

The move to turn the clocks forward by an hour on March 11 rather than the usual early April date was mandated by the U.S. government as an energy-saving effort.

But other than forcing millions of drowsy American workers and school children into the dark, wintry weather three weeks early, the move appears to have had little impact on power usage.

"We haven't seen any measurable impact," said Jason Cuevas, spokesman for Southern Co., one of the nation's largest power companies, echoing comments from several large utilities.

That may come as no surprise to the Energy Department, which last year predicted only modest energy savings because the benefits of the later daylight hour would be offset.

For example, households may draw less electricity for lights at night, but will use more power in the early in the day as they wake to darker and chillier mornings.

Residential lighting comprises only about 10 percent of the average homeowner's electricity use, while air conditioners, heaters and refrigerators consume much more power. Washers, dryers and plasma televisions are also bigger users of electricity than lighting.

"There might have been a small increase in morning lighting, and a slightly larger decline in evening lighting usage," said a spokeswoman at New Jersey utility Public Service Enterprise Group Inc, but that modest decline will have no impact on its overall sales or earnings.

The U.S. Congress will evaluate the effects of the earlier switch to Daylight Saving Time.

Perhaps the biggest impact was felt by the computer users and Blackberry addicts who had to scramble for software patches to keep their digital devices on the right time.

Dan Hermann, a computer programmer in New York, updated his gadgets to the new daylight savings time three weeks ago, only to have them automatically shift forward by another hour on Sunday, the previous start date for daylight savings time.

"I panicked. I thought I was late for church," said Hermann.

Even without an energy savings benefit, some Americans gave a good review to the new Daylight Savings Time.

"I love that you can leave work and it's still day light," said Todd Knapp, an avid runner and consultant in New York.

Yep.  The new VoIP phone system at work did this over the weekend past and had to be adjusted back.  Kinda funny too, since the review of that work caused the system to lock out the admin account due to the password being mistyped too many times in too short of a time span.  Gave us a chance to learn more about how the fool thing works and what NOT to do when accessing it.

But I'm sure that folks like Microsoft made a nice bundle of cash on the deal.  Their patch for products out of official support was running $40,, but they graciously dropped that to $4,000 after much outcry from customers.

I expect to see another round of fun with this next year when congress rolls the DST changes back to where they used to be.  It could get to me a yearly thing, as our leaders tinker with the date for DST in an effort to look like they are doing something for the environment.
I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

This is a real bummer.  However, I refuse to stop making fun of those that stood in the way of DST in Indiana. grin

Not patching Exchange 2003 or Outlook FTW.  laugh

Does any image illustrate so neatly the wrongheadedness of the Obama administration than Americans scrambling in terror from Air Force One?
Just great…Chicago politics has spread to all 57 states.
They told me if I voted for John McCain, my country would look like it is run by people with a disturbing affinity towards fascism. And they were right!

I heard that the extra hour of sunlight a day is contributing to global warming.   grin

Of course it saves no energy. It gives me more time to go the driving range in the evening, and guess how I get there? A good, old-fashioned polluting car.  grin

This kind of makes me want to giggle, and cry.  It's a good glimpse of the future.  Picture 10 years from now, and everyone is driving electric cars and living off nuclear power, but the Earth is still showing a slow steady cyclic heatup...people will be just as surprised that global warming hasn't stopped.

The US is the only country dumb enough to think it can manipulate time to it's advantage in any meaningful way. DST is worthless enough in Lower 48. It's even more worthless up here in Alaska.

Due to the drastic differences of daylight and dark during the summer and winter respectively, the time changes are nothing more than a semi-annual aggravation.
Fairbanks gets over 21 hours of sunlight during the longest days in summer and about 3hrs in the shortest of winter. Where's the "effin" advantage in changing the time?

But it is for the children.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

I guess we'll have to go one step further and ban traditional light bulbs in favor of CFL's.  Then the savings will really kick in.  Yeah, that's the ticket; more regulations.

It helps me pollute less.  With an extra hour of daylight, I don't have to rely on battery powered lights for biking as much.  Therefore, I use less electricity charging them (I can now get 2-3 rides off a single charge rather than 1.5).

I rode 14 miles Monday and 12 last night and only used 1hr of battery capacity.
