That looks like one of those big wide tornadoes rolled through.  Amazing there are not more dead.

What common home construction would be better?  I know there are designs that are resistant, but those are normally more expensive.  I guess the question would be what is better that subdivisions are likely to see.

Down here, everyone builds on a slab and 3 to 5 feet up on a pad to avoid flooding.  Tornadoes aren't exactly rare, but hurricanes and flooding happen a lot more.

I think the only way to be tornado resistant in a meaningful way is to go underground. An EF-5 can strip the blacktop off of a paved road.

Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Looking at video this morning, I saw what happened to what looked like at least 1/4" steel girders. They were twisted up like they were made of thin aluminum. Truly impressive in a very scary way.

We were in a fourth floor hotel room, and had two tornado warnings. The first was for the tornado that killed a woman in Defiance, MO.

Quote
A tornado that came through the area at about 7:35 p.m. completely destroyed a home near Highway F and Stub Road and swept away an 84-year-old woman and her husband, launching them about 100 yards away, said Dan Casey, fire chief at the New Melle Fire Protection District. The two were injured, and the woman later died from her injuries; the husband survived. Casey said they were on the first level of the home when one was getting a glass of water while the other was in bed.

When we went down for the second one, the TV in the dining room was playing coverage of the Edwardsville tornado that took out the Amazon facility.

Very thankful we were spared.

The hotel staff were unaware of any plans for tornados. They could only suggest we wait in the dining room. Which has large windows on every side. It was only later I realized a better place; a long hallway with guest rooms on either side.

Safe in my part of Ky.  Damage is mind boggling in the videos.  From what I remember, aren't the liberals in charge of the weather machines?

Brother just walked in after finding a photo in the back yard.
It's a bunch of students in a school gym for some sort of meeting. Can't tell what school and nothing is written on the back but I wonder.
The track would be somewhat similar to the photo in the article.

The destruction a long on the ground, strong tornado can do is mind boggling. We were living in Oklahoma in May of 1999 when they had a big tornado event. Going from Lawton to OKC was a path of destruction that you can't even describe. You can see pictures of these things and say "Wow, that looks bad" but seeing it in person is many times worse. The little town of Bridge Creek OK was scoured down to the foundations of the houses. Even that outbreak pales in comparison to what just happened.

The designs I have seen were essentially a concrete dome.  I think they were supposed to be proof against even strong tornadoes.  One link I saw mentioned Quonset huts as wind resistant.  I guess that is a similar shape.

A search shows others looking at reinforced concrete walls and such.  I imagine at least a concrete first floor would help and allow you to set up a safe room in the interior.  I am sure it all costs more.

It also occurs to me that homes up there might not have the typical hurricane wind standards that are common down here.  Mostly it is higher rated roof construction and the roof supports are strapped to the walls so the house can't be pulled apart so easily.  Not going to stop a real big tornado, but might help.

This one popped up on a search as a home made of concrete wall sections.  I doubt it would survive undamaged, but it might not be completely wiped out like some pictured.

This link looks similar.  Some sort of pre-fab foam wall sections with concrete poured in.

In ground, below the garage and even safe rooms in the garage are pretty popular around Moore, OK. They have a steel closet looking room that a lot of people do as an add on after the house is built. Growing up in Lawton we had neighbors that had storm shelters. Most of them were built as bomb shelters in the 50/60s and repurposed when it was figured out the nukes weren't coming as everyone predicted. They were nearly all well below ground. I spent more than one night in a neighbors fraidy hole.

2 workers killed after collapse at Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville

I guess this might be related.

They're should have hid in the restroom, that's suppose to be the safest place......oh wait, Amazon.
